AbstractThis paper intends to structure a reversed reading of the matrix texts that assemble the city of Ribeirão Preto's official historiography. Through these mediations we find an array of urban preconditions amid the consecrated territorial narratives that gives birth to existence of the world's coffee plantation leader in the turn of the twentieth century. Backed by Fernand Braudel, Henri Lefebvre, Bernard Lepetit and Maurice Halbwachs, we invite the reader to look inside out the articles of Martinho Prado Junior published by A Provincia de São Paulo, in 1877. Again, through this same approach, we take the dispute raging between the local historians Plinio Travassos dos Santos e Osmani Emboaba da Costa to a deeper level of analysis. From the case study of Ribeirão Preto's urban history, we dare to sustain that urbanity is more than a natural unfolding, it is an existential condition of nineteenth-century cities of the Estate of São Paulo.
