Avaliou-se, de forma prospectiva, a ovário-histerectomia (OVH) nas abordagens laparoscópica e aberta, mediante a comparação de parâmetros intra-operatórios como tempo cirúrgico, complicações (hemorragia, lesões viscerais e vasculares), dificuldades técnicas e custos. Foram utilizadas 30 cadelas, sem raça definida, com peso entre 6,5 e 19,0kg, aleatoriamente distribuídas em dois grupos de 15 animais. Os animais do grupo I foram submetidos à OVH laparoscópica enquanto os do grupo II à OVH aberta. O tempo cirúrgico médio na abordagem laparoscópica foi significativamente maior (61,6± 14,15 minutos) quando comparada com a aberta (21,13±4,3 minutos), enquanto que o grau de sangramento foi menor na laparoscopia. Foram observadas lesão no baço com agulha de Veress ou trocarte em três animais. Houve ampliação da incisão para retirada do útero e ovários em dois animais do grupo I e em um animal do grupo II. Não houve indicação para conversão da técnica laparoscópica. Concluiu-se que ambas as abordagens mostraram-se seguras e eficientes para realização do procedimento. O tempo cirúrgico foi maior na laparoscópica enquanto que a ocorrência de hemorragia foi menor. A OVH laparoscópica mostrou-se mais onerosa.

Quinze cães, sem raça definida, de ambos os sexos, de peso entre 18 e 25kg, foram submetidos à secção artroscópica do ligamento cruzado cranial (LCCr) para indução da doença articular degenerativa (DAD). Após três semanas de instabilidade articular, o LCCr foi substituído pela fáscia lata segundo a técnica de Schwalder (1989) e os animais foram distribuídos em três grupos de cinco. Os animais do grupo I, controle, não receberam tratamento medicamentoso; os do grupo II, 24mg/animal de sulfato de condroitina, por via IM, de cinco em cinco dias, totalizando seis aplicações; e os do grupo III foram tratados com hialuronato de sódio na dose de 20mg/animal, por via IV, de cinco em cinco dias num total de três administrações. Ao final de 90 dias, os animais foram eutanasiados e procedeu-se à colheita e ao processamento histológico da membrana sinovial e da cartilagem articular para avaliações morfológica e morfométrica. No grupo I foram observadas alterações degenerativas de DAD mais acentuadas que nos demais grupos, como redução do número de condrócitos, presença de pânus, fibrilações, fissuras, erosões e irregularidades na superfície articular. No grupo II observou-se elevação do número de condrócitos com aumento da atividade de síntese da matriz e redução das lesões na superfície da cartilagem. No grupo III houve aumento do número de condrócitos que eram, muitas vezes, morfologicamente inviáveis. Todos os grupos apresentaram proliferação da membrana sinovial e presença de infiltrado linfoplasmocitário na subíntima e na perivascular. Nos grupos I e III, a proliferação da membrana sinovial era exuberante com formação de pânus, presença de sinoviócitos achatados ou ausência de sinóvia com tecido de granulação. Os resultados sugerem que o sulfato de condroitina estimulou a cartilagem articular, diminuindo ou retardando as alterações da DAD e o hialuronato de sódio não interferiu no processo degenerativo da cartilagem articular. Não foi constatada ação favorável das drogas na membrana sinovial.

Ovário-histerectomia: estudo experimental comparativo entre as abordagens laparoscópica e aberta na espécie canina. II-Evolução clínica pós-operatória [Ovariohysterectomy: experimental and comparative RESUMOAvaliou-se a evolução clínica pós-operatória de 30 cadelas sem raça definida, durante sete dias, aleatoriamente distribuídas em dois grupos de 15 animais, submetidas à ovário-histerectomia (OVH) pelas abordagens laparoscópica (grupo I) e aberta (grupo II). Avaliaram-se os parâmetros de comportamento, fisiológicos e de complicações na ferida cirúrgica. Foi utilizada uma escala descritiva para avaliação da dor e das complicações pós-operatórias. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os grupos quanto às variáveis: locomoção, postura, interferência na ferida cirúrgica, tensão abdominal, vocalização, apetite, evacuação, freqüências cardíaca e respiratória e temperatura corporal. Quando as variáveis de comportamento e fisiológicas foram avaliadas em conjunto (escore 1), observou-se maior dor pós-operatória apenas no segundo dia do pós-operatório nas cadelas submetidas à cirurgia aberta. Quando as complicações das feridas cirúrgicas foram avaliadas em conjunto (escore 2), observou-se maior ocorrência dessas nos animais do grupo 1. The objective of this study was to detect the reasons of rooster's fertility decrease at 50 weeks of age. Therefore, the reproductive system of broiler breeder roosters was laparoscopic, macroscopic and histopathology evaluated, and a comparison of the anatomical aspect with the sperm analysis and birds' age was realized. Cobb roosters (n = 59) were distributed into two groups (30 and 50 weeks). Evaluations were performed with laparoscopy, macroscopy and histopathology, and seminal quality, blood serum testosterone concentration and weight were also determined. The old roosters presented smaller testicle size, higher intensity epididymal lithiasis and lower testicle sperm production, compared to the young roosters. The use of the endoscope could easily distinguish a normal-sized testicle than an atrophic one. Four old roosters with severe testicular atrophy did not show spermatogenesis, although three still had sperm in the ejaculate. This would falsely indicate a wrong diagnosis of normal fertility before the testicular atrophy took place. In conclusion, in addition to the weight increase with age, the testicular atrophy and impairment of sperm production seemed to be the main reason to the decrease in the rooster's fertility at 50 weeks of age. Therefore, the use of the laparoscopy as a way to detect the roosters with testicular atrophy before 50 weeks of age and their removal from them flock could be useful as a diagnostic tool to prevent the birds' fertility loss.

Sixteen cows in early lactation were randomly distributed into two groups in order to evaluate the effects of mammary biopsies and increased milking frequency on tissue characteristics, post-biopsy udder health and histology. One group was milked twice a day (2×) starting on the 2nd day after calving, until 28 days in milk (DIM). The other group was milked four times a day (4×) from two to 21 DIM, and twice a day (2×) from 22 to 28 DIM. On days 2, 7, 14, 21, and 28 postpartum, one fragment of secretory tissue was collected from one mammary quarter at a time. Collections were alternated between the four mammary quarters per collection day. A total of 80 mammary tissue samples were collected. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the tissues were conducted by histologic examination. Animal health was assessed by observation of feed intake behavior immediately after biopsy, and weight and body condition score before and one week after biopsy. Udder health was assessed daily from calving to 60 DIM with California Mastitis Test (CMT) and by noting alterations in the milk such as blood, milk clots, blood clots, clinical signs of mastitis. Milk composition and somatic cell count (SCC) were analyzed before and after the biopsies. Milk production was evaluated before biopsy, on the day of biopsy, and after the biopsy. An average of 10 fields at 40× magnification was obtained from each sample. There were no evident changes in mammary morphology as a result of milking two or four times/day at any of the evaluated time points. Biopsy wounds healed rapidly without infection. Intramammary bleeding and CMT alterations were observed in 96% and 75% of the biopsied mammary quarters, respectively. Clinical mastitis was diagnosed in 12% of the biopsied quarters. Different milking frequencies had no effect on the frequency and duration of post-biopsy alterations. Milk production decreased after biopsies done on days 2 for 2× and 4× groups, but it returned to pre-biopsy values within 1 day. Milk composition and SCC were affected transiently. Increased milking frequency did not influence udder health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of frozen-thawed spermatozoa within the uterine lumen and oviducts following intrauterine laparoscopic deposition at two sites. Twelve bitches of unknown reproductive history were randomly distributed into two groups. Semen (3 ml containing 300 × 10(6) frozen-thawed spermatozoa) was infused at the uterine body (UB group) or at the cranial tip of the left uterine horn. A 22-G catheter was used to access the uterine lumen. Sperm cell distribution was evaluated after ovariohysterectomy performed 3 h after artificial insemination (AI). There was no difference between groups in mean time to perform AI. Spermatozoa were detected in all uterine segments, including the tip of both horns, but none was detected in the oviduct. The 22-G catheter facilitated deposition of semen in the uterine lumen, particularly at the UB site. Sperm cell distribution occurred evenly along both horns, independent of the site of semen deposition.
