Show more

“…Although studies have confirmed that parenteral administration of chondroitin sulfate stimulates chondrocytes metabolism and satisfactorily reduces the progression of articular cartilage degeneration in DAD models induced by chronic instability in dog knee (Gonçalves et al, 2008;Melo et al, 2008), the results of the present study clarify that the chondroitin sulfate in association with glucosamine, as a nutraceutical, did not promote the same stimulus in the repair of sharply induced osteochondral defects.…”

“…However, the biochemical details of this therapeutic option are still not completely understood and further investigation is necessary (Blitterswijk et al, 2003), as the degenerative process has not been satisfactorily prevented or delayed yet (Melo et al, 2008).…”

“…The model used CCLT to induce morphological changes allowed the evaluation of this common disease, as described by Biasi et al (2005), Gonçalves et al (2008) and Melo et al (2008). The development and progression of OA occurred due to joint instability, which changed the distribution of weight on the joint (Glasson et al 2007, Herzog & Longino 2007.…”
Section: Discussionmentioning
“…Melo et al 15 have stated that changes are expected in both groups due to joint instability. The imbalance in the distribution of forces on the articular surface led to the breakdown of proteoglycan arrangements, to the consequent increase in cartilage hydration (swelling) and to the exposure of collagen fibrils (fibrillation).…”

“…However, these changes were superficial and showed early osteoarthritis stages due to the collagenase concentration, according to Kikuchi et al 6 . The ACLT method has created degenerative cartilage lesions after 12 weeks, as well as more severe degradation 4,15,16 .…”
