Resumo: O presente artigo teve como objetivo identificar alguns fatores determinantes para a qualidade do ensino em Matemática. Para isso foram utilizados os dados disponibilizados pelo Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (INEP) referentes à Prova Brasil aplicada em 2011. O trabalho está fundamentado na teoria do capital cultural de Bourdieu, que foi também utilizada para justificar a escolha das variáveis na pesquisa estatística. Para o tratamento desses dados, utilizamos o software Statistical Analysis System (SAS). Com nossa pesquisa pudemos inferir que existe associação positiva entre o capital cultural familiar do aluno e o desempenho do mesmo na disciplina de Matemática da Prova Brasil de 2011 para os alunos de 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental do Município de Maringá/PR.
