children and adults with AIDS present alterations in audiological assessment and Auditory Brainstem Response. This suggests the involvement of peripheral and central auditory pathways. Findings of the present study emphasize the effectiveness of using electrophysiological hearing measures in order to better identify the brain injury level in patients with AIDS, besides allowing the monitoring of the development rate of the disease.
Background: auditory evoked potentials. Aim: to describe the results of brainstem auditory evoked potentials (PEATE), middle latency auditory evoked potentials (PEAML) and cognitive potential (P300) in individuals over 50 years. Method: this study was developed at the Speech and Hearing Investigation Laboratory in Auditory Evoked Potentials of the Speech-Language and Hearing Course of the Department of Physiotherapy, Speech-language and Hearing Sciences and Occupational Therapy of FMUSP. Twenty four subjects (45 ears) were evaluated through PEATE and P300, and only 18 of these subjects (36 ears) were evaluated through PEAML. All subjects had ages between 51 and 74 years and were divided in three groups: GI (50-59 years), GII (60-69 years) and GIII (70-79 years). All subjects presented either normal hearing or neurossensorial hearing loss of a moderate-severe level in the PEATE, and of a moderate level in the PEAML and in the P300. The frequency range evaluated in the PEATE and in the PEAML varied from 3000 to 6000Hz, while in the P300 it varied from 1000 to 1500Hz. For the statistical analyses of the data, the Kruskal-Wallis test, the Mann-Whitney test and the two proportion equality test were used. Results: significant statistical differences were simultaneously observed between the groups for the interpeak I-V in the PEATE and for the Na wave latency in the PEAML -in the PEATE the difference was caused by GIII and in the PEAML it was caused by GI. A statistically significant difference between the groups was observed for the latency of the P300 component. Considerable alterations were also found regarding the quality of the responses of the auditory evoked potentials, indicating a strong correlation between the deterioration of the responses and the increase in age. Conclusion: the aging process of the auditory system progressively affects the auditory pathways throughout the brainstem and temporal lobe. Key Words: Auditory Evoked Potentials; P300 Event-Related Potentials; Aging. ResumoTema: potenciais evocados auditivos.
Objective To establish reference intervals for cognitive potential P300 latency using tone burst stimuli. Methods This study involved 28 participants aged between 18 and 59 years. P300 recordings were performed using a two-channel device (Masbe, Contronic). Electrode placement was as follows: Fpz (ground electrode), Cz (active electrode), M1 and M2 (reference electrodes). Intensity corresponded to 80 dB HL and frequent and rare stimulus frequencies to 1,000Hz and 2,000Hz, respectively. Stimuli were delivered binaurally. Results Mean age of participants was 35 years. Average P300 latency was 305ms.Conclusion Maximum acceptable P300 latency values of 362.5ms (305 + 2SD 28.75) were determined for adults aged 18 to 59 years using the protocol described.
Our sample included subjects of advanced age, primarily women, who were institutionalized less than five years, with multiple diseases and polypharmacy users. They presented long-standing short-duration mixed dizziness, that occurred more than once a month and affected mainly the functional aspect.
Purpose: to evaluate the understanding of noise and the perception about quality of life of gas station workers. Methods: this is an exploratory study with a sample of 32 employees, of both sexes from three gas stations of a country town in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Data were collected during the activities allusive to the International Noise Awareness Day, in April 2015, by a questionnaire on noise and hearing health and by the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-Bref).Results: most workers reported not having a hearing loss, discomfort or pain when subjected to noise. However, they believe that exposure to noise can lead to hearing loss as well as tinnitus and dizziness. The working environment was indicated as noisy, but the workers do not perceive noise producers and do not adopt preventive measures. Concerning the quality of life, the lowest score was for the environmental domain, in both sexes and age equal and less than 30 years. Conclusion: the study allowed to understand that the majority of workers does not have significant knowledge about the need for protective measures against noise; also showed that the environmental domain was the most compromised in the perception of employees on quality of life.
