Cell wail mannoprotein of nonpathogenic yeasts is surface exposed, since the cells are agglutinated by concanavalin A and antimannoprotein antibodies. However, nonencapsulated cells of Cryptococcus neoformans were agglutinated neither by concanavalin A nor by antimannoprotein antibodies. Immunogold electron microscopy located most mannoprotein in the inner cell wall. Chemical analysis of purified cell walls showed the lack of mannose, xylose, and galactose residues. These data indicate that cryptococcal mannoprotein recovered from the cultural supernatant is a nonstructural element of the cell wall.
A direct cytoplasmic connection between macrophages and potential antibody-producing cells has been demonstrated in lymph nodes and spleen. This was observed in the tissues from both immunized and nonimmunized rabbits.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
