The current study was undertaken to evaluate various quality attributes of buffalo meat and to characterize it using principal component analysis (PCA)

A study was conducted to develop organic briquettes using biomass originating from slaughterhouse wastes and to investigate its potential as a nutrient source for plant growth.Dried rumen contents were mixed with fresh blood collected after bleeding of animals in different proportions and dried using tray drier. The dried rumen content-blood (RB) mixture was further mixed with commercially available coir pith in 12 different proportions. The rumen content-blood-coir pith (RBC) mixture was formed into briquettes using a hydraulic biomass briquetting machine. Each organic briquette was 5 cm in diameter and had an average weight of 30-40 g. The treatments were analyzed for pH, moisture content, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen, carbon: nitrogen ratio, total phosphorus and total potassium. Organic briquette having rumen content with 100 % blood and 80 % coir pith (T10) recorded the highest total nitrogen, total phosphorus and total potassium content. The treatments for plant growth studies were selected based on the criteria that each treatment had highest values for at least two of the three primary nutrients of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. The treatments T5, T7, T8, T10 and T12 were selected for plant growth studies. Pot experiment using selected briquettes was carried out to determine the effect of selected briquettes on growth parameters and yield attributes of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus).Nutrient release pattern of the selected organic briquettes was also studied. The best desirable growth parameters and yield attributes of okra was observed in T10. Availability of nutrients in the medium were relatively less during first two months of planting (MAP), however, it significantly increased between 3 MAP and 4 MAP, which resulted in better plant growth and fruit yield. The study showed that there is great potential for development of organic briquettes using slaughter house wastes as an eco-friendly process, which are compact, easy to transport and market, and ideal for grow bag cultivation and garden nurseries.

Background and Aim: Ulcerative corneal lesions are common ocular affections encountered in veterinary ophthalmology, having a higher incidence in dogs with brachycephalic conformation. Prompt and effective diagnosis and repair are necessary to avoid corneal perforation and restore vision. Corneal wound healing is a complex phenomenon often resulting in vision impairment as a consequence of corneal fibrosis and pigmentation. The present study investigated the efficacy of decellularized and gamma-irradiated bovine omentum as an extracellular matrix scaffold in the reconstruction of extensive and full-thickness corneal defects, and the cytotoxic effects of mitomycin-C (MMC) to prevent corneal fibrosis and pigmentation. Materials and Methods: Twelve injured corneas of eleven dogs irrespective of breed, age, and sex were randomly divided into Groups I and II, consisting of six corneas each. Under general anesthesia, corneal grafting with decellularized and gamma-irradiated bovine omentum was carried out in Group I, whereas Group II corneas underwent single time intra-operative application of topical MMC for 2 min before corneal grafting with the same material. Epithelialization of cornea and observations including corneal edema, neovascularization, the extent of pigmentation, corneal clarity, and scarring was recorded on days 7, 14, 21, and 60 postoperatively. Results: All corneas in Group I showed early epithelialization by day 7 compared to Group II where the MMC delayed epithelialization in 50% of the corneas. Visual function scores improved greatly from 0.17±0.17 in Group II on the day of presentation to 1.0±00 by the end of the observation period compared to Group I (from 0.33±0.15 to 0.88±0.11). Although epithelialization and corneal healing were delayed, 50% of the corneas recovered with undetectable corneal scar and melanosis at the end of the observation period in Group II due to the anti-fibrotic effect of MMC. Conclusion: From the present study, it was concluded that re-epithelialization of the cornea was enhanced by corneal grafting with decellularized bovine omentum, and application of MMC was effective in delaying corneal fibrosis and pigmentation.

In recent years, employing radiation technology is gaining great interest in degradation of industrial effluents. In this work the possibility of using gamma irradiation to degrade Reactive Red 120 (C.I.292775) was explored. The effects of pH, dose of gamma irradiation and concentration of dye were examined and their interaction were also established based on their response. For the analysis and optimisation of variables, three factor three level Box-Wilson face centred central composite design (CCF) was used. Analysis of variance with R(2) = 0.9988, adjusted R(2) = 0.9981 and the adequate precision value of 122.303 indicates that the CCF model can be used. The coefficient of variation (0.54%) indicates the reliability of the model. The dose of gamma irradiation (kGy) and the concentration of dye (mg/L) showed significant effects on the degradation of RR 120, while a difference of 6 to 10% degradation was observed in extending the pH towards the acid or alkali range from pH 7.00. The maximum concentration of dye degraded was observed as 347.509 mg/L at initial pH: 7.0, dose of gamma irradiation: 5.94 kGy and initial concentration of dye: 500 mg/L. This predicted value was found to be in agreement with the experimental value on the optimised conditions.

a b s t r a c tIn this study, three artificial neural network (ANN) models were developed for the prediction and simulation of the degradation of textile dyes (Reactive Orange 16 -Monoazo; Reactive Red 120 -Diazo; Direct Red 80 -Poly azo) by high energy gamma radiation. Concentration of H 2 O 2 (0-2.0 mM), dose of gamma ray (1-6 kGy), pH (3.0-11.0), concentration of dye (100-500 mg/L) were given as inputs and the output was percentage of degradation. A three-layer feed-forward network was trained using 750 sets of input-output response per dye using Levenberg-Marquardt back propagation algorithm with ten neurons in the hidden layer. The efficiency of the trained network was validated by using sets of input operated at pH 6.0 & 12.0. The results predicted were very close to the experimental results with R 2 : 0.9967 for Reactive Orange 16; 0.9960 for Reactive Red 120; 0.9977 for Direct Red 80. The sensitivity analysis showed that Concentration of H 2 O 2 & Dose of gamma ray have strong effect whereas pH and concentration of dye have little effect on the degradation process. The results showed that the statistical modelling by ANN could effectively predict the behavior of radiolytic degradation of reactive dyes.
