We have analyzed the linear propagation characteristics of planar periodic segmented waveguides with infinitely extended parabolic refractive-index segments in the transverse direction, using the matrix formulation of Gaussian beam propagation. Modal propagation and the variation of effective index as a function of duty cycle and the period of segmentation have been studied. Conditions for the existence of guided modes in such a segmented waveguide are presented.

Barium malate trihydrate crystals are grown by limited diffusion technique in hydro-silica gel. Relevant functional groups are identified from the FT-IR spectrum. Single crystal XRD shows that the crystal system is monoclinic with space group P2 1 /n. The optical band gap of the material, estimated using DRS, is 1.028 eV. The material exhibits a three stage thermal decomposition pattern.

In the title compound, a pheno­thia­zine moiety is linked to a planar carbazole unit (r.m.s. deviation = 0.029 Å) by a C—C single bond. Their mean planes are inclined to one another by 27.28 (5)°, and the pheno­thia­zine moiety possesses a typical butterfly structure with a fold angle of 27.36 (9)° between the two benzene rings.
