Free Space Optical (FSO) Communication Systems are wireless systems capable of providing high speed, secure and cost effective communication between two entities. The channel for FSO is expressed in terms of the Malaga-distribution model. It is a generalized channel model encompassing all the channel conditions and previous models. In this work, the performance of a Subcarrier Intensity Modulation FSO system is analyzed by considering the ill effects channel turbulence and pointing error and derived a closed form analytical expression for bit error rate and channel capacity. The results demonstrate the performance deterioration the system suffers because of the channel and also how the m-distribution model can be used to obtain the performance over other FSO channels.
Inthis paper, the performance analysis of a subcarrier intensity-modulated free-space optical (SIM-FSO) communication system is investigated for the generalized channel model known as M-distribution channel, and new closed-form analytical expressions are derived for the outage probability and average channel capacity of the system. Since, the turbulenceinduced fading model considered is the generalized one, the expressions obtained can be applied for performance analysis of SIM-FSO communication systems for most of the previously existing channel models.Keywords-FSO (Free Space Optics), Subcarrier intensity modulation, Malaga-distribution channel, Outage probability, Ergodic channel capacity.
I. INTRODUCTIONFree-space optical communication (FSO) is an optical communication technology that uses light propagating in free space to wirelessly transmit data for telecommunications or computer networking applications. Recently, free-space optical (FSO) communication systems have received considerable attention due to their various advantages over RF communication systems. These advantages are: operation over the unlicensed optical spectrum making it cost-free to obtain the necessary bandwidth and free from other regulations, high data rate and line-of-sight wireless transmission, free from health hazards such as non-ionizing radiation and high security since it being highly directive it is difficult to overhear and if somebody overhears it is easy to detect that. FSO communication is also very cost-effective and easy for deployment and maintenance compared to fiber optical communication systems [1]. Applications of FSO systems cover areas such as indoor, outdoor and under water domains
