En este artículo se estudian los discursos de las autoridades civiles, religiosas y militares que realizaron descripciones sobre la geografía de la Sierra Gorda y sus habitantes entre 1780 y 1819. Por un lado se analiza, a través del discurso, el proceso mediante el cual se conformó la imagen uniforme de la Sierra Gorda: agreste, infértil e inaccesible, a la que paulatinamente se fue asociando con las formas de vida y el temperamento de la gente que habitaba las montañas. Por el otro, se expone una aproximación analítica a la relación entre los discursos de las autoridades novohispanas y las campañas de ordenamiento y control territorial. Finalmente, se muestra cómo a través de dichas campañas, los márgenes de la Sierra Gorda fueron cambiando durante las primeras dos décadas del siglo XIX.
Durante el conflicto bélico entre México y los Estados Unidos, los habitantes de Sierra Gorda emprendieron un fuerte rechazo al llamado hecho por el gobierno mexicano para enrolarse en los cuerpos del ejército que combatirían a las tropas norteamericanas en el norte de México. A partir de documentación obtenida en el archivo estatal de Guanajuato, el presente artículo analiza los motivos de la oposición a la guerra entre los serragordanos y la manera peculiar como concibieron a los norteamericanos: no como enemigos, sino potenciales aliados frente al gobierno y las autoridades militares mexicanas que habían causado múltiples agravios entre las poblaciones, desde la anulación de gobiernos hasta la extracción de hombres de sus poblaciones de origen para conducirlos a una muerte segura en batalla.
En este artículo se presenta un estudio detallado en torno a las perspectivas que diversas autoridades religiosas plasmaron sobre los indios de tres rancherías en la entonces jurisdicción de San Luis de la Paz, a los que se buscaba congregar en la Misión de Arnedo, durante los últimos años del siglo XVIII y los primeros años del siglo XIX. A través de este artículo, se busca destacar la forma cómo los religiosos, tanto los frailes del Colegio Apostólico de San Pedro y San Pablo de Michoacán como los párrocos, representaron la vida de los indios en las inmediaciones del poblado de San Juan Bautista de Xichú de Indios.
