Abstract:JET underwent a transformation from a full carbon-dominated tokamak to a full metallic device with the ITER-like wall combination for the activated phase with Beryllium main chamber and Tungsten divertor. The ITER-Like Wall (ILW) experiment at JET provides an ideal test bed for ITER and shall demonstrate as primary goals the plasma compatibility with metallic walls and the reduction in fuel retention. We report on a set of experiments ( = 2.0 , = 2.0 − 2.4 , = 0.2 − 0.4) in different confinement and plasma conditions with global gas balance analysis demonstrating a strong reduction of the long term retention rate by a factor ten with respect to carbon references. All experiments have been executed in a series of identical plasma discharges in order to achieve maximum plasma duration until the analysis limit of the active gas handling system has been reached. The composition analysis shows high purity of the recovered gas, typically 99% D. For typical L-mode discharges ( = 0.5 ), type III ( = 5.0 ), and type I ELMy H-mode plasmas ( = 12.0 ) a drop of the retention rate normalised to the operational time in divertor configuration has been measured from 1.27 × 10 has been obtained with the ILW. The observed reduction by one order of magnitude confirms the expected predictions concerning the plasma-facing material change in ITER and widens the operation without active cleaning in the DT phase in comparison to a full carbon device.

Divertor detachment is explored on the TCV tokamak in alternative magnetic geometries. Starting from typical TCV single-null shapes, the poloidal flux expansion at the outer strikepoint is varied by a factor of 10 to investigate the X-divertor characteristics, and the total flux expansion is varied by 70% to study the properties of the super-X divertor. The effect of an additional X-point near the target is investigated in X-point target divertors. Detachment of the outer target is studied in these plasmas during Ohmic density ramps and with the ion ∇B drift away from the primary X-point. The detachment threshold, depth of detachment, and the stability of the radiation location are investigated using target measurements from the wall-embedded Langmuir probes and two-dimensional CIII line emissivity profiles across the divertor region, obtained from inverted, toroidally-integrated camera data. It is found that increasing poloidal flux expansion results in a deeper detachment for a given line-averaged density and a reduction in the radiation location sensitivity to core density, while no large effect on the detachment threshold is observed. The total flux expansion, contrary to expectations, does not show a significant influence on any detachment characteristics in these experiments. Abstract. Disruption mitigation is mandatory for ITER in order to reduce forces, to mitigate heat loads during the thermal quench (TQ) and to avoid runaway electrons. A fast disruption mitigation valve (DMV) has been installed at JET to study mitigation by massive gas injection (MGI). Different gas species and amounts have been investigated with respect to timescales and mitigation efficiency. We discuss the mitigation of halo currents as well as sideways forces during vertical displacement events, the mitigation of heat loads by increased energy dissipation through radiation, the heat loads which could arise by asymmetric radiation and the suppression of runaway electrons.
