Strengthening the early warning system to forecast extreme weather and provide action-oriented advisories may increase rice yield as well as enhance the income of the farmers through minimizing risks and losses, if proper use of the generated advisory is ensured. This study assessed the importance and impact of weather forecast based advisory service (WFBAS) in Bangladesh. Literature review and field experimental data were used in a sensitivity analysis to show the impact of WFBAS on rice production. Available literatures suggested that the weather based advisory service would enhance rice yield by around 6.7-10%, but the experimental findings revealed that yield advantage could be 21.48%. Besides, the adoption of this technology would reduce the cost of cultivation by 12%, whereas the aggregate impact would increase the farmers’ profit by 25%. In the sensitivity study, we considered the production and price of Aman and Boro seasons (actual and government procured prices for 2018-19) and assumed only 6.70% yield increase with 5% farmers adopting of WFBAS. As such, additional 0.172 million tons will be added to the national rough rice production and thus the nation will be benefited by 3143 million Bangladeshi taka (BDT) at the actual farmgate price and it would be 4478 million BDT at the government procured price. The return on one BDT investment in this technology would be 51-73 BDT based on actual and procured prices. The projection showed enhenced production of the rough rice at 0.119 million tons and 0.214 million tons by 2025 and 2030, on which the additional return would be BDT 2441 and BDT 5223 million at the projected actual farmgate price and BDT 3522 and BDT 6979 million at the projected Government procured price, respectively. Hence, the successful implementation of the WFBAS will help to develop resilient rice farming communities, minimize livelihood risk, reduce the cost of production, utilize resources efficienty, and enable the farmers to take maximum benefit from favorable weather conditions through improved agricultural extension services. Finally, the enhanced yield and loss reduction will help to achieve the target of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) by 2030 through sustaining rice production in Bangladesh under changing climate. Photosensitive rice varieties have higher advantages in delayed planting. The present study was undertaken to figure out the degrees of delayed planting and evaluate the performance of six modern Aman rice varieties (BR11, BR22, BR23, BRRI dhan46, BRRI dhan54) against three sets of delayed planting. Each rice variety showed considerable variations for plant height, days to panicle initiation, flowering and maturity. BR22, BR23, and BRRI dhan54 showed a drastic reduction in days to panicle initiation and varied from 65 to 58 days, 69 to 60 days, and 62 to 55 days respectively, while it varied from 76 to 80 days for the control variety BR11. Similarly, days to flowering of BR22 and BRRI dhan54 showed a gradual decrease following different planting time and varied from 92 to 86 days, and 83 to 77 days respectively, while it varied from 109 to 107 days for the control variety BR11. For the above traits, BRRI dhan44 and BRRI dhan46 showed a moderate reduction depending on the three sets of planting time. Grain yield of BR22, BR23 reduced at the third set with a value ranging from 5.8 to 5.0 t/ha, 6.1 to 5.1 t/ha respectively, while BRRI dhan54 showed consistency in grain yield with a range from 5.3 to 5.2 t/ha. In contrast, grain yield of remaining rice varieties ranged between 5.7 to 4.5 t/ha for BRRI dhan46, 6.2 to 3.9 t/ha for BRRI dhan46 while severe reduction for the control variety BR11 with a range from 4.4 to 2.0 t/ha was observed. In conclusion, BRRI dhan54 was found more suitable rice variety in delayed planting compared with other photosensitive rice varieties. An investigation was carried out to analysis the genetic diversity of 12 Bangladeshi local Boro rice (Oryza sativa L.) germplasm using morphological traits and molecular markers. Eight morphological traits (viz., days to 50 percent flowering, growth duration, plant height, filled grain/panicle, 1000 grain weight and grain yield) and eight Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers were used for this analysis. The plant morphological traits exhibited more variation among the genotypes tested. Several traits were found to be significantly positive in correlation coefficient analysis and thus those traits can be considered stable as demonstrated by their coefficient of variability. A set of eight SSR primer pairs was used for molecular characterization resulting 49 alleles, where average of allele number was 6.13. The polymorphic information content (PIC) values ranged from 0.67 (RM1) to 0.86 (RM314) with an average of 0.76. The highest PIC value (0.86) was obtained for RM314 which also gave maximum alleles. The PIC value revealed that RM314 was the best marker for 12 genotypes tested. The cluster analysis based on UPGMA system grouped 12 genotypes into four clusters.
The experiment was conducted to study the performance of three T. Aman varieties (BR22, BRRI dhan46 and BRRI dhan49) under normal transplanting with 30, 45 and 60 days old seedlings and double transplanting ( 30 days + 30 days) system at Plant Physiology Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during T. Aman season, 2013. Interaction effect was significant only for days to maximum flowering and sterility percentage. BR22 required longer duration to complete flowering when transplanted with 60 days old seedlings, while sterility percentage was higher in BRRIdhan 49 when transplanted with same aged seedlings. Photosynthetic rate, LAI, total dry matter production, yield contributing characters and harvest index of tested varieties were insignificant under different transplanting methods; these parameters contributed to produce similar grain yield. The results revealed that rice varieties BR22, BRRI dhan46 and BRRI dhan49 showed similar performance under normal transplanting with different aged seedlings and double transplanting in respect of photosynthetic rate, tillering pattern, LAI, total dry matter production and grain yield during T. Aman season.
