This study aims to know the use of ICT frequency and purposes among EFL university students. It is also examines the students’ perception and expectation towards ICT use in learning English as a foreign language. This research applied quantitative approach with a survey research design. The data were collected from a survey which involved 337 students who were selected using stratified random sampling technique from 13 faculties of a state university in Jambi, Indonesia. The instrument used in collecting the data was a questioner adapted from Tri and Nguyen (2014). Data collected were analyzed by using SPSS 23 in form of descriptive quantitative. The findings indicated that the students spent more time in using ICT for general purposes than English learning purposes. On the other hand, they showed positive attitudes towards the use of ICT in learning English. The students perceive that ICT has the important role in improving their English language skills, and they expected that the teachers use ICT more frequently in teaching and learning process. Furthermore, they expected that campus can provide sufficient equipment and ICT access in each classroom in order to make the learning process become effective.
Driven by sparse investigations on cultural content in a textbook in English as a foreign language context, this study aims to analyze the cultural information embedded in an English textbook for senior high school students in Indonesia. A critical content analysis was employed to analyze the textbook entitled “Pathway to English for SMA/MA Grade XI” in compliance with the cultural information cores from Adaskou et al. (1990). The findings showed that the textbook contains four main topics of cultural information infused in 14 reading texts, 20 pictures, 30 recordings, and seven cultural awareness texts. The reading texts provide equal information related to target culture (i.e., the culture belongs to English speaking countries) and local culture, but the pictures, recordings, and cultural awareness topics tend to inform the target culture information. Furthermore, the researchers found several weaknesses in the reading texts and pictures where the information provided was too general that they neither contain cultural information nor relevant to other information in the textbook. Meanwhile, all pictures were in white and black with less detail provided. The results suggested that teachers should adapt and balance the cultural information in the textbook with their local cultures or norms by finding other materials from various sources.
This study aims to examine the use of social media in English language learning by the students of English Study Program at Jambi University. This study applied an exploratory study to investigate the use of social media for English language learning. The researcher employed a survey and semi-structured interview in collecting the data. Sixty-seven students participated to answer the questionnaire and ten participants were interviewed, randomly selected from participants who answered the questionnaire. Basic statistical analysis was used to analyze quantitative data from the questionnaire, and the data from interviews were analyzed using phenomenological case analysis combined with coding thematically. The findings indicated that a range of social media especially Instagram and Facebook are used by the students. Consequently, the students spent more time in using social media for general purposes than English learning purposes. However, they showed positive attitudes towards the use of social media in English language learning. The students perceive that social media plays an important role to improve their English language skills. Furthermore, it promotes social media use and encourages students to use social media to improve their English language skills. In addition, the social media, which is mostly used in learning English by the university students of English Study Program at Jambi University, is Instagram, and they usually use the social media for learning English at home.
This study was an attempt to determine the impact of interaction between teaching media and vocabulary mastery towards students’ learning achievement in colleges of education at Jambi University. This is a quasi-experimental study with nonequivalent control and experimental group design. Based on the test for normality, homogeneity, and analysis of variance to the data students’ achievement score of experiment class can be concluded that, there are significant differences of learners’ achievement between before and after treatment in experimental class using audio-visual media. Then, there are significant differences between the learners’ vocabulary mastery on their learning achievement. The result of this study showed; 1. There is a significant effect between teaching media toward learners’ achievement. Test result obtained that p-value 0,015 (<0,05) 2. Vocabulary mastery gave the significant effect to the learners’ achievement. Test result obtained that p-value for vocabulary mastery is 0,000 (<0,05). 3. There is no interaction influence between the teaching media and vocabulary mastery towards learners’ achievement. Test result retrieved that p-value is 0,948 (>0,05).
This study examines the factors of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) that influence the acceptance of ICT use for English language learning of EFL University Students. This study also addresses the possible obstacles that affect and limit the use of ICT by adding motivation and ICT skills as extended TAM variables. This area of research topic is unexplored in the Indonesian context, especially in higher education institution. An analysis of these factors can assist instructors to understand how students learn using ICT and in providing useful advice to them during the learning process. The quantitative method was applied in this study, which included 303 students' teachers of English Education at a state university in Jambi, Indonesia. The instrument used in collecting the data was an online questionnaire. Data collected were analyzed by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with SmartPLS3 program to analyze the proposed hypotheses formed in order to meet the study objectives. The SEM result indicated that the factors of the technology acceptance model are the main factors affecting the ICT use. The study concluded that the influence of motivation and skills for ICT usage was mediated by three main TAM variables, namely perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitudes.
