PurposeAnemia could cause psychiatric symptoms such as cognitive function disorders and depression or could deteriorate an existing psychiatric condition when it is untreated. The objective of this study is to scrutinize the frequency of anemia in chronic psychiatric patients and the clinical and sociodemographic factors that could affect this frequency.MethodsAll inpatients in our clinic who satisfied the study criteria and received treatment between April 2014 and April 2015 were included in this cross-sectional study. Sociodemographic data for 378 patients included in the study and hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit values observed during their admission to the hospital were recorded in the forms. Male patients with an Hb level of <13 g/dL and nonpregnant female patients with an Hb level of <12 g/dL were considered as anemic.FindingsAxis 1 diagnoses demonstrated that 172 patients had depressive disorder, 51 patients had bipolar disorder, 54 patients had psychotic disorder, 33 patients had conversion disorder, 19 patients had obsessive-compulsive disorder, 25 patients had generalized anxiety disorder, and 24 patients had other psychiatric conditions. It was also determined that 25.4% of the patients suffered from anemia. Thirty-five percent of females and 10% of males were considered as anemic. The frequency of anemia was the highest among psychotic disorder patients (35%), followed by generalized anxiety disorder patients (32%), and obsessive-compulsive disorder patients (26%). Anemia was diagnosed in 22% of depressive disorder patients, 25% of bipolar disorder patients, and 24% of conversion disorder patients.ResultsThe prevalence of anemia among chronic psychiatry patients is more frequent than the general population. Thus, the study concluded that it would be beneficial to consider the physical symptoms and to conduct the required examinations to determine anemia among this patient group.

Frequency of domestic violence in psychiatric patients and related factorsObjective: Objective of the present study is to determine prevalence of domestic violence among married female patients who have applied to our psychiatry outpatient clinic, and to investigate the relationship between exposure to violence and levels of anxiety and depression.Method: One hundred consecutive married female patients were included into the study. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and a sociodemographic and clinical data form designed by the authors were applied to each case. Furthermore, all participants were asked to complete a questionnaire including questions such as whether there was violence (economic, physical, sexual and psychological) at home; if present, what its frequency and duration is; and whether the partners were subject to violence during their childhood.Results: It was determined that 76% of the patients were subjected to at least one type of violence during marriage, 68% were exposed to verbal, 45% were exposed to physical, 39% were exposed to economic, and 11% were subject to sexual violence. As level of education was increased, the rate of being a victim of physical violence was increased directly. Of females who were the victims of physical violence (n=18), 40% reported that they inflicted violence to their children, and 15 of these patients (33%) said that they attempted a suicide during their marriage. Conclusion:In the present study, it is determined that domestic violence is correlated with increases in anxiety and depression scores. Independently from violence type, it is determined that domestic violence causes increased number of suicide attempts. Yöntem: Çalışmaya ardışık evli 100 kadın hasta alındı. Her olguya, Beck Depresyon Envanteri (BDE) ve Beck Anksiyete Envanteri (BAE) ile yazarlarca hazırlanmış bir sosyodemografik ve klinik veri formu uygulandı. Ayrıca tüm katılımcılardan, şiddetin (ekonomik, fiziksel, cinsel ve psikolojik) olup olmadığı, varsa sıklığı ve süresi, eşlerin çocukluğunda şiddet görüp görmediği gibi bilgileri sorgulayan bir anketi doldurmaları istendi.Bulgular: Hastaların %76'sının evli iken en az bir şiddet tipine maruz kaldıkları, %68'inin sözel şiddete, %45'inin fiziksel şiddete, %39'unun ekonomik şiddete, %11'inin ise cinsel şiddete uğradığı bulunmuştur. Eğitim düzeyi arttıkça fiziksel şiddete maruz kalma oranı doğru orantılı olarak artmaktaydı. It is suggested that in case of blockage in an energy center, illness or imbalance may occur and it may be treated by touching by hand according to Reiki. In this case, the first episode of psychosis with intense occupation of reiki will be presented. A 57 year-old woman presented with the complaints of auditory hallucinations, decreased need for sleep, and skepticism. In psychiatric examination; poor self-care, irritable affect, decreased psychomotor activity, flight of associations, mystic delusions, and auditory illusions were noted. It was her first psychiatric administration and her complaints were exacerbated 10 days ago. According to her family, the patient, who has no intimate friendship, has been busy with reiki for 4 years. As the level of reiki goes up, the patient, who predicts the increase of the auditory hallucinations as a reward, has tried to heal the patients through the energy and has tried to eat the earth and to throw herself from 3 meters high. For a possible organic etiology, no pathological findings were found in the results of the blood tests and cranial MRI. Haloperidol 20 mg/day, biperidene 4 mg/day quetiapine 100 mg/day was recommended for the patient who was diagnosed as atypical psychosis. Within a week, her complaints were down. The beginning of the psychotic manifestations of our case, such as hearing the voices, may suggest that a mission like healing in this ritual leads the patient to a psychotic life. From another point of view, the fact that the patient's introverted prodromal period may suggest that there is a psychotic pattern with negative symptoms in the beginning, and perhaps the patient may turn to this area for self-medication. It may be appropriate to evaluate Reiki healing technique from the perspective of psychosis in addition to healing activity.
