Sociolinguistics aspects such as Semantic and Pragmatic affect language user in every situation. Those two contexts even exist in a proficiency test to become the test foundation. This research was conducted to identify the semantic and pragmatic contexts in TOEFL test simulation on the Listening section. The researcher applied a qualitative descriptive approach to this research, and Document Analysis and the researcher as the instrument. The object of this research was TOP NO 1 TOEFL SIMULATION published by FORUM TENTOR INDONESIA. The result reveals that there are several types of semantic and pragmatic context found in the test simulation. The semantic contexts found in 8 questions from the 30 questions analyzed. The types of semantic contexts which were found namely; Meaning, Semantic Feature, and Semantic Roles. Moreover, the semantic type that mostly occurred is Semantic Roles (4 Questions), then followed by Semantic Feature (2 Questions) and Meaning (2 Questions). However, the Pragmatic context quantities are found more than the semantic context. From the 30 analyzed questions, the Pragmatic contexts found are 40 questions, it happens because one test item can have more than one type of pragmatic. Also, the Reference type in Pragmatic occurred in most questions because the narrator on the listening passage uses referencing (nature of Reference) to make the question. The type of pragmatic context found namely; Context, Politeness, Reference, and Speech Act. The type of pragmatic context which is mostly occurred is Reference (25 questions).
This study was conducted to determine the efforts made by minority groups who are being oppressed by racism based on context-relationship of African Americans at the movie 42 (2013). Findings of this article based on qualitative studies with auteur theory, and mise-en scene, undertaken in movie 42 (2013) regarding racism towards minority groups, African-American, and by implementing thick description the researcher highlighted minority group�s achievement�s at the movie 42 in the field of Sports and the relation to life-betterment. The result revealed that racism towards minority group had emerged because of the so-called white�s supremacy concept. This study found that African American as minority group were able to alter their life despite of racism through equal sport�s opportunity. Besides, this study has highlighted one pivotal area in which any minority group should concern to enhance their life; sports. Moreover, even though this study focusing more on the relation of the effort�s made by minority group at America, this study illustrates the importance of having initiatives in providing better opportunity related to sports to ensure a better life opportunity among minority groups all over the globe.
Reinforcing character education in the early childhood education or preschooler was deemed important nowadays; however, in order to do so it requires creative yet unique method to pique young pupils’ interest. Therefore, this research intends to elaborate the idea of reinforcing character education by implementing Bilingual Story-Telling Picture Book towards the pupils at one of the preschoolers located in Malang, East Java. This Bilingual Story-Telling Picture Book was composed specifically to teach the students about character education by integrating it with one of extracurricular activities in this school, the English language extracurricular activity. Therefore, this Bilingual Story-Telling Picture Book attempted to not only reinforcing the young pupils’ character education in story telling activity, but also improving their literacy and interest towards English language. Thus, the results indicate that the students were keen on learning English on the story-telling activity delivered by the teacher in charge whilst absorbing the value of character education delivered by the book.
Despite the growing interest in online learning over the past years, Indonesian students had to adjust to online interactions. Thus, Indonesian students, in general, still needed to be thoroughly instilled in this learning mode due to various challenges. This qualitative research aimed to discover the most difficult English skills during online learning from Indonesian students’ perspectives. This research utilized a survey design to rank the complex English skills; Writing, Speaking, Listening, and Reading. There were 55 students from different majors as participants from various universities in Indonesia who already partake in English courses by undergoing online mode. The instruments in this research are questionnaires regarding how one of the English skills is regarded as the most difficult during online learning, including the cause and methods to lessen the difficulty of obtaining thorough explanations. Critical Discourse Analysis was utilized as a data analysis technique to comprehend multiple perspectives better; in educational and non-educational contexts. The findings discovered that the majority of the participants deemed listening as the most difficult one. This research also discovered the factors that made listening difficult among students and the methods devised to lessen the difficulties in listening during online learning.
Name-giving is not merely a compilation of words to meet official record registration, yet the idea behind this has some socio-cultural values. Indonesian Muslim names have now experienced some changing from the past. This research aims at analyzing the discourse of millennial Muslim names in Indonesia. NVivo 12 Plus was used to analyze the nodes data of three categories—Pure Indonesian, Pure Arabic, and Mixing across its case—parents and children. Another analysis used was word frequency to picture the frequent word clouds used in parents' and children's naming practices. Results show a shift in Indonesian millennial Muslims' naming practice, as the Pure Arabic and Mixing categories have upward trends compared to the Pure Indonesian variety. This present research has shed a light that Indonesian Millennial Muslim parents want to pertain their children's identity as Muslims and want their children to be part of the global world.
