The enthalpies of dilution of binary and ternary aqueous solutions at 25 "C containing the isomeric disaccharides cellobiose, maltose and trehalose have been investigated. The considerable variation in the enthalpic second virial coefficients appears to be related to the tendency the molecules have to hydrogen bond to the solvent, and using the results obtained, in association with literature information for other saccharide-containing systems, it is shown that a reasonable correlation can be obtained between the virial coefficients and hydrogen-bond numbers deduced from model-building studies. He" = m2(h2 + h, m + . . .
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
