The Toad-headed agama, Phrynocephalus mystaceus Pallas 1776, was described in 1999 from eastern Khorasan by Anderson. Seven specimen of The Toad-headed agama were collected in Khar Turan National Park during fieldwork from June 2008 to June 2009. The new locality of the species is situated about 900 km west of the type locality. This record indicates a wider distribution of Phrynocephalus mystaceus on the Iranian plateau than previously thought. Information on morphological characters and habitat is presented.
The taxonomic status of five nominal species of cyprinid fishes from the Middle East is reviewed by applying morphological and molecular (COI) characters. Alburnus populations from the Iranian Lake Namak basin, the Zayandeh River drainage and the upper Karun River drainage are identified as A. doriae. Petroleuciscus esfahani, from the Zayandeh River, as well as Alburnus amirkabiri, from the Lake Namak basin, are synonyms of A. doriae. Molecular data support treating Alburnus mossulensis and A. sellal as a single species. As First Revisers we give precedence to A. sellal over A. mossulensis.
The genus Alburnus, which belongs to the largest teleost family, Cyprinidae, comprises 38 valid species distributed from Europe to northern parts of Southwest Asia. Herein we provide an updated list of the Alburnus seven valid species registered from Iran.
