Probably the most important environmental challenge of this century is to adapt to climate change and develop strategies to minimize its effects. This study aims to conduct an investigation to detect changes in temperature and precipitation in the northwest region of Rio Grande do Sul with the use of different general and regional circulation models (GCMs and RCMs, respectively). Seven distinct locations in the region were considered, for which there were ten different climate projections. Additionally, we investigated the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events using different extreme precipitation indices. These projections indicate an increase of mean annual temperature of almost 3˚C till the end of the century, as well as an increase in annual precipitation. The seasonal analysis has demonstrated that the largest increases of temperature are projected for winter and early spring and do not coincide with the summer months of the main crop cultivation (soybean) in the region. Additionally, it is expected high amounts of rain during these same months. In general, trends in extreme precipitation indices were detected for the RCM projections in most of locations. It can also be concluded that it is possible that the spatial distribution of the impacts of climate change on agriculture will not be uniform.
Artificial neural networks for estimating the soil water retention curve have been developed considering measured data and require a large quantity of soil samples because only retention curve data obtained for the same set of matric potentials can be used. In order to preclude this drawback, we present two ANN models which tested the performance of ANNs trained with fitted water contents data. These models were compared to a recent new ANN approach for predicting water retention curve, the pseudocontinuous pedotransfer functions (PTFs), which is also an attempt to deal with limited data. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to verify the influence of each input parameter on each output. Results showed that fitted ANNs provided similar statistical indexes in predicting water contents to those obtained by the pseudocontinuous method. Sensitivity analysis revealed that bulk density and porosity are the most important parameters for predicting water contents in wet regime, whereas sand and clay contents are more significant in drier conditions. The sensitivity analysis for the pseudocontinuous method demonstrated that the natural logarithm of the matric potential became the most important parameter, and the influences of all other inputs were reduced to be not relevant, except the bulk density.

USE OF RAINFALL DATA OBTAINED BY REMOTE SENSING IN AN AGRO-HYDROLOGICAL MODEL
ABSTRACTIn the last years, precipitation data obtained from remote sensing have become potentially useful in agricultural and hydrological studies, acquiring greater importance in regions where climatic variables obtained by conventional methods are limited or nonexistent. Precipitation data are input variables for agro-hydrological models that simulate different scenarios in agricultural areas. Thus, this study compares the application results of the agrohydrological model SWAP during 2 years, 2008 and 2009, using rainfall data obtained by remote sensing and conventional methods. Simulations were performed with and with no
Water flow in vadose zone is driven by the interaction between natural conditions in the surface and hydraulic properties of the soil, and among the latter, hydraulic conductivity has a great importance. Among several existing models to analytically represent its relationship with water moisture and pressure head, the most widely used is the resulting model of the
