The distribution of phosphorus (P) fractions in soil plays a decisive role in soil P bioavailability; however, the characteristics of soil P fractions under consecutive cropping in a solar greenhouse remain unclear. To evaluate the effects of the long-term successive vegetable cropping on soil P fractions and the microbial community composition in greenhouse soil, a continuous long-term cropping experiment was conducted using cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) in a solar greenhouse starting from 2006 to 2018. Soil P fractions and the microbial community composition were determined using the Hedley continuous extraction method and the phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) method, respectively, in the 1st, 9th, 13th, and 21st rounds of cultivation. The soil total phosphorus (TP) content increased from 0.90 g·kg−1 in the 1st round to 3.07 g·kg−1 in the 21st round of cucumber cultivation. With an increase in continuous cropping rounds, soil available phosphorus (AP) increased and the phosphorus activation coefficient (PAC) decreased, with no significant difference between the 13th and 21st rounds. After 21 rounds of continuous cropping, the soil organic matter (SOM) content was 16.34 g·kg−1, 1.42 times that of the 1st round. The abundance of soil bacteria, actinomycetes, Gram-negative bacteria (G−), Gram-positive bacteria (G+), and total PLFAs initially increased with continuous cropping rounds, but then decreased significantly, and the ratios of fungi:bacteria (F/B) and G+/G− bacteria also increased significantly with continuous cropping rounds. The contents of soil labile P, moderately labile P, and non-labile P increased significantly over 21 continuous cropping rounds. Together, these results demonstrate that long-term continuous cropping can directly lead to the accumulation of P fractions, but it can also affect the abundance of actinomycetes through SOM enrichment, which indirectly leads to the accumulation of non-labile P. This study provides a theoretical basis for future soil P fertilizer management and vegetable production sustainability.

Greenhouses, commonly used for vegetable production, are experiencing large nitrogen (N) inputs in North China, which leads to soil acidification, increases soil N availability, and affects microbial community structure and composition. However, it remains unclear how N enrichment influences soil microbial functional activities in this region. In this study, we conducted a two-year pot experiment in a greenhouse to evaluate the effects of four different rates of N addition (0, 334, 668, and 1002 kg N ha−1 year−1) on cucumber soil properties, extracellular enzyme activities, and community level physiological profiles (CLPP). We found that high-N addition (1002 kg N ha−1) caused a massive accumulation of inorganic nitrogen and soil acidification, which was not beneficial to soil microbial activities. The color development (AWCD) values for the metabolism of microbial carbon sources and the activities of soil extracellular enzymes also showed a significant decrease in high N(N3) treatment. Additionally, the activity of leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) of N3 decreased by 36% and 50% compared to the N0 and could be a good predictor for microbial functional diversity and microbial biomass carbon (MBC). Structural equation modeling (SEM) confirmed that the reduction of microbial functional diversity is mainly coregulated by the decline of soil pH and the change of cucumber BGB (belowground biomass) resulting from soil C and N imbalance. Overall, excessive N-fertilizer amendment can be more dangerous to microbial community functional diversity, especially for carbohydrate utilization which adversely affects cucumber yield in current intensive management.

There is insufficient information regarding the stoichiometric variation and coupling status of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) in the leaves of nutrient-enriched greenhouse agroecosystems with increasing planting time. Therefore, we assessed the variation in elemental stoichiometry ratios in soil and cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) leaves, and the coupling status of elemental utilization in the leaves under continuous cropping systems using natural (only soil; i.e., control soil, CO) and artificial (soil + straw + chicken + urea; i.e., straw mixture soil, ST) soil via monitoring studies for 11 years in a solar greenhouse. Soil organic C, total N, and total P concentrations increased by 63.4%, 72.7%, and 144.3% in the CO, respectively, after 11 years of cultivation (compared to the first year), and by 18.1%, 24.3%, and 117.7% in the ST under continuous cropping conditions, respectively. Total K concentrations remained unchanged in both soils. Moreover, the availability of these soil elements increased to different degrees in both soils after 11 years of planting. Additionally, the leaf P concentration increased by 9.8% in the CO, while leaf N and K concentrations did not change, suggesting decoupling of P utilization from that of N and K in leaves under a continuous cropping system. These findings suggest that imbalanced soil nutrients under continuous cropping conditions results in decoupling of P from N and K in the utilization of leaf nutrients.
