Studies have shown a worrisome condition as to the conservation of Civil Engineering Structures (CESs) in Brazilian highways. This situation mainly results from the lack of an efficient system for managing such structures, specifically during their operational stage, when periodic maintenance is required. As a solution, the Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) has proven to be an efficient system for managing CESs, integrating different technologies into this process. The purpose of this paper is to assess how BrIM can contribute to improve the management procedures of these structures. The research methodology has been divided into two stages. The first one is the literature review detailing the management scenario of CESs in the country, as well as the analysis of the BrIM used as a tool to manage such structures in a general context. The second stage is a case study addressing the operational and maintenance process of CESs used by a highway concessionaire in an important Brazilian state. The analysis concluded that, although recent, the adoption of BrIM has been growing in several countries, and it can substantially contribute to improving the operational and maintenance stages of CESs.
Among the activities of budgeting, quantification is the most manual one, slow and subjected to errors. Errors of quantification may compromise not only the budgeting but also the planning and control of the enterprise. The applications BIM most used by design and building companies (DBC) in Brazil do not provide, in the way in which they are many times used, the quantities needed and enough for budgeting. This paper has as its goal to show the limitations mentioned and propose use alternatives using BIM, aiming to overcome them, increasing the degree of quantification automation in the reality of DBC companies in Brazil. For that, a general conceptualization of budgeting and quantification was made. A case study illustrating usual BIM for design, quantifying the limitations pointed, and the improvements obtained with proposal to overcome them. Results of the work may contribute to widen the knowledge and continuation of researches on the subject.
Project management in infrastructure projects: Brazilian and foreign construction companies operating in Brazil case studies ABSTRACT The performance of international companies in the civil construction sector in Brazil has grown significantly and this requires an efficient articulation in the project management for its success. The companies need to adapt to the local environment by integrating knowledge, strategies and well-defined processes due to the challenges of this process, since, if the companies focus only on one of these aspects and neglect others, their projects performance may reduce. The aim of this paper is to analyze how project management impacts on the success of infrastructure projects executed by Brazilian and foreign companies operating in the Brazilian civil construction. This analysis has been developed through literature review and case studies, in which, project managers and project coordinators of four companies, one of Spanish origin, one of Argentine originand two of Brazilian origin were interviewed. Through a comparison of the processes adopted by these companies, it was possible to identify the critical points and difficulties in the processes regarding risk management, design process management, information and knowledge management, and communication management for the project execution. As a result, guidelines were proposed to the agents involved, aiming the continuous improvement of the processes adopted. The research results shall be useful to the definition of references on internationalization in the construction sector and the characteristics that should be considered in project management.
In the construction industry, the exceeding costs and reduced profits have become usual in the ongoing projects, which motivates companies to seek strategies to resolve these problems in order to increase the sponsors satisfaction. This paper examines the interface of design process management, risk management as well as cost management as a strategic tool for overcoming the results initially anticipated for infrastructure projects and consequently increase profits for construction companies. This analysis has been developed through literature review and case studies, in which fourteen project managers from six infrastructure projects of a Brazilian civil construction company were interviewed. The results demonstrate that: (1) the design process management reduces risks, deadlines and execution costs; (2) the identification and control of risks reduces project and execution uncertainties; (3) the cost management adequate to the stakeholders profile reduces the loss of results; and (4) the share of profits from overcoming results encourages active collaboration from employees in the conduction of management processes. The research also revealed that items (1), (2), (3) and (4) relate in a cyclical way, in which item (4) propels the other items, and the increase in profits feedback into the process.
