We report the temperature-dependent evolution of Raman spectra of monolayer WS2 directly CVD-grown on a gold foil and then transferred onto quartz substrates over a wide temperature range from 84 to 543 K. The nonlinear temperature dependence of Raman shifts for both and A1g modes has been observed. The first-order temperature coefficients of Raman shifts are obtained to be −0.0093 (cm−1/K) and −0.0122 (cm−1/K) for and A1g peaks, respectively. A physical model, including thermal expansion and three- and four-phonon anharmonic effects, is used quantitatively to analyze the observed nonlinear temperature dependence. Thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of monolayer WS2 is extracted from the experimental data for the first time. It is found that thermal expansion coefficient of out-plane mode is larger than one of in-plane mode, and TECs of and A1g modes are temperature-dependent weakly and strongly, respectively. It is also found that the nonlinear temperature dependence of Raman shift of mode mainly originates from the anharmonic effect of three-phonon process, whereas one of A1g mode is mainly contributed by thermal expansion effect in high temperature region, revealing that thermal expansion effect cannot be ignored.

Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have attracted much attention due to their unique magnetic properties and promising applications in spintronics. Here, we report on the growth of ferrous chloride (FeCl2) films on Au(111) and graphite with atomic thickness by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) and the layer-dependent magnetic properties by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The growth follows a layer-by-layer mode with adjustable thickness from sub-monolayer to a few layers. Four types of moiré superstructures of a single-layer FeCl2 on graphite and two types of atomic vacancies on Au(111) have been identified based on high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). It turned out that the single- and few-layer FeCl2 films grown on Au(111) exhibit a 1T structure. The DFT calculations reveal that a single-layer 1T-FeCl2 has a ferromagnetic ground state. The minimum-energy configuration of a bilayer FeCl2 is satisfied for the 1T–1T structure with ferromagnetic layers coupled antiferromagnetically. These results make FeCl2 a promising candidate as ideal electrodes for spintronic devices providing large magnetoresistance.

Laser-induced breakdown spectra were measured by using a 1.3 ps laser pulse on glass, steel, and copper. Material ablation with the use of picosecond excitation is very precise with well-formed sharp-edged craters. The spectra obtained with 570 nm, 1.3 ps excitation decay more quickly and show significantly lower background emission than those that use 1064 nm, ∼ 7 ns excitation. The background was low enough that excellent laser-induced spectroscopy (LIBS) spectra were obtained on the three samples by using a single 1.3 ps laser pulse and a nongated detector. Similar results were obtained by using nanosecond excitation but with higher relative background signals. The radiance was similar with the use of pico- or nanosecond excitation; however, the radiant intensity was larger with nanosecond excitation because of the larger plasma.

Carrier density dependence of electron spin relaxation in an intrinsic GaAs quantum well is investigated at room temperature using time-resolved circularly polarized pump-probe spectroscopy. It is revealed that the spin relaxation time first increases with density in the relatively low density regime where the linear D'yakonov-Perel' spin-orbit coupling terms are dominant, and then tends to decrease when the density is large and the cubic D'yakonov-Perel' spin-orbit coupling terms become important. These features are in good agreement with theoretical predictions on density dependence of spin relaxation by Lü et al. [Phys. Rev. B 73, 125314 (2006)]. A fully microscopic calculation based on numerically solving the kinetic spin Bloch equations with both the D'yakonov-Perel' and the Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms included, reproduces the density dependence of spin relaxation very well.
