PALAVRAS-CHAVE: antropologia do som, etnomusicologia, música, instrumentos musicais.
regional reference point, such as expressed for example in the names temple depascua (for Easter), temple de carnaval (for carnival), or temple vallemayu (river valley), etc. Of special note are the accompanying text transcriptions (in Quechua, with French and English translation), which give the listener a point of orientation in terms of contents and leave an impression of sound and sense of the Quechua language. The editors probably found it necessary for reasons of space not to use the normal short-line order of verse but instead have combined two lines into one long one. Before the song texts are short indications of the occasions and functions of the individual selections. Among the represented genres we find, among others, funa ioayiio (Indian huayno), aiwisku (potato-harvest song), tonada de Santa Cruz) navidad (Christmas song), carnaval (carnival song), pascua (Eastern song), tinku (for the tinku ritual), and a newer song about Tupaj Katari. This CD can be most warmly recommended to those who are involved with the traditional music of the campesinos of the Andean highlands and particularly also with Quechua songs and texts. This well-balanced sound documentation provides in a refreshing way a glimpse into those. older playing traditions and techniques (punteado and rasgueado) of which one can also still find traces of in modern urban charango folklore.
Comparison of contemporary African and so-called African-Brazilian musics is possible to a limited extent as an experimental tool. Without disregarding the methodological problems, which are implicit in any comparison of a cross-cultural nature, I wanted to test some assumptions regarding the historical, linguistic, and organological links between the Brazilian berimbau musical bow and the Angolan mbulumbumba musical bow from Wila province (Kubik 1987, Oliveira Pinto, 1986). To gain insights about the musicians' concepts, i.e. their "emic" theory, it is necessary to learn from their verbalising of specific problems and aspects of their music. In addition, the discussion on something which is completely new from the Brazilian musicians' point of view can complement their discourse about musical practices.
