Erst mit Beginn der industriellen Revolution wurden die traditionellen Brückenbaustoffe vom industriell herstellbaren Werkstoff Eisen (Coalbroakdale Bridge, 1782) und später Stahlbe ton allmählich in den Hintergrund gedrängt.
