Three business case scenarios in the context of emerging mobile access network technologies and business players have been studied and the economical results are presented. The aim is to cover some of the most interesting business alternatives in providing the new 3G and beyond services including cases where the operator may have an existing second-generation cellular network or not, and a license for the 3G UMTS network or not. The importance of analyzing different business models and technologies in the mobile industry has become more crucial for the investment policy of the telecom operators. This paper aims to cover some of the most interesting business alternatives in providing the new 3G and beyond services including cases where the operator already has an existing second-generation cellular network and perhaps even a license for the 3G UMTS network, and cases where the operator does not have any existing network. Three cases for incumbents and new entrants are foreseen, leaving alternatives for new competing 3G technology deployment or acting as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) without owning any radio infrastructure. A techno-economic approach has been used to identify business opportunities and quantify the potential profitability of different kind of business players. The scenarios have been analyzed in the Western European context by different country groups that are not exactly representative of any defined country, but rather share typical demographic characteristics.

This paper introduces an innovative approach to an Open Access Network (OAN) built upon the existing "privately owned" wireless LANs and the users' access lines (ADSUVDSL, optical fibre, cable modems). By providing up to 25Mbis shared capacity to the stationary and casually visiting users in a wireless LAN zone, the OAN is probably the only realistic alternative to realize the future 30 and 40 visions for mobile communication. An OAN has the potential to integrate P2P communication into legacy networks, thus new market segments will be opened for network and service providers, and new and improved services can be offered to the customers. The paper contains a superficial analysis of the actual elements needed to realise the network. Also, some of the most important network behaviour and performance parameters are identified and discussed.
