Após quase cinqüenta anos de Estudos Pós-coloniais na Literatura e sua consolidação no mundo acadêmico em várias universidades, inclusive brasileiras, é necessário refletir e problematizar essa nova estética. Em primeiro lugar, analisam-se os conceitos fundamentais do pós-colonialismo, tais como a tipologia colonial, a colonização européia, a objetificação do nativo, a diáspora, a hibridização, a resistência, o revide, a releitura de material textual e a reescrita de obras canônicas. A partir dessa teoria, analisam-se questões sobre o sujeito pós-colonial na literatura; os instrumentos de poder pela mímica e pela paródia; o problema do entrelaçamento de raça, etnia e gênero; o relacionamento entre a teoria pós-colonial autóctone e a eurocêntrica; a desconstrução do cânone literário. Parece que os Estudos Pós-coloniais abrem novas perspectivas não apenas para nos revelar os sistemas de poder e suas influências, mas, de modo especial, nos fornecem parâmetros para investigações mais profundas e eticamente mais corretas do material textual oriundo de excolônias.
Diaspora em Crossing the river (1993) e A distant shore (2003) de Caryl PhillipsInvestigam-se no contexto da literatura caribenha os dois tipos de diáspora, ou seja, a antiga que compreende os escravos e os trabalhadores asiáticos contratados, e a moderna que abrange os refugiados, o tráfico de mulheres e imigrantes procurando trabalho. Os romances Crossing the River e A Distant Shore, de Caryl Phillips, publicados respectivamente em 1993 e 2003, tratam dos dois tipos de diáspora. Enquanto a primeira analisa as diferentes trajetórias de um ex-escravo estadunidense repatriado a Libéria e de uma mulher negra em sua viagem ao oeste dos Estados Unidos, rumo à liberdade, a segunda discursa sobre os problemas diaspóricos de um Africano contemporâneo que foge de seu país para afastar-se da guerra civil e para achar emprego num país democrático. Os resultados da pesquisa mostram que numa economia transnacional as pessoas da antiga diáspora tendem a encontrar a liberdade e a subjetividade mais do que aquelas envolvidas na diáspora moderna.
