Association of Escherichia coli and enterococci with particulates present in runoff from erodible soils has important implications for modeling the fate and transport of bacteria from agricultural sources and in the selection of management practices to reduce bacterial movement to surface waters. Three soils with different textures were collected from the Ap horizon (silty loam, silty clay loam, and loamy fine sand), placed in portable box plots, treated with standard cowpats, and placed under a rainfall simulator. Rainfall was applied to the plots until saturation-excess flow occurred for 30 min, and samples were collected 10, 20, and 30 min after initiation of the runoff event. The attachment of E. coli and enterococci to particles present in runoff was determined by a screen filtration and centrifugation procedure. Percentage of E. coli and enterococci attached to particulates in runoff ranged from 28 to 49%, with few statistically significant differences in attachment among the three soils. Similar partitioning release patterns were observed between E. coli and enterococci from the silty loam (r = 0.57) and silty clay loam soils (r = 0.60). At least 60% of all attached E. coli and enterococci were associated particles within an 8- to 62-microm particle size category. The results indicate that the majority of fecal bacteria attach to and are transported with manure colloids in sediment-laden flow regardless of the soil texture.

An 18-month field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of grass filter strips in removing sediment and various nitrogen species from runoff. Runoff was collected from six 3.7 m wide experimental plots with 24.7 m long runoff source areas.Two plots had 8.5 m filters, two plots had 4.3 m filters, and two plots had no filters. Runoff was analyzed for total suspended solids (TSS), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (T.KN), filtered TKN (FTKN), NH4-N, and NO3-N. The Mann-Kendall nonparametric test for trend (changes in filter effectiveness over time) indicated that there were no trends in the yields and concentrations of TSS, N03-N, Nll4-N, TKN, and FTKN for the 8.5 m filter over time. For the shorter 4.3 m filters, there were significant upward trends in TKN yield and downward trends in TSS, NH4-N, and FTKN concentrations, indicating that trapping efficiency may have started changing with time. The Kruskal-Wallis test indicated that the 8.5 m filters reduced median yields and concentrations of TSS and all N species, but the 4.3 m filters only reduced the median yields and concentrations of TSS, NH4+.N, TKN, and the median concentration of FTKN. The 8.5 and 4.3 m filters reduced contaminate yields and concentrations from 42 to 90 percent and from 20 to 83 percent, respectively.

Addition of phosphorus fertilizer corrected the phosphorus deficiency found in fescue grass at higher sludge application rates. These investigators conducted three greenhouse experiments to determine the impact of alum sludge from the Harwood's Mill water treatment plant, Newport News, Va., on the growth and chemical composition of fescue grass. Fescue yields decreased with increased sludge addition, a trend that was attributed to reductions in plant‐available phosphorus (P) at higher loadings. Supplemental P fertilization corrected this deficiency. Lime addition did not affect yield. The presence of manganese and copper in the sludge increased metal uptake by the plants but did not affect yield.
