ENTREPRENEURSHIP FROM SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PERSPECTIVEAbstract: Discussions about sustainable development have encouraged the various actors in society and, in particular, companies to rethink their strategies in order to contribute not only to economic growth, but also to create social and environmental values, and to ensure that the needs of current generations can also be met by future 1 Endereço: Avenida Prefeito Lothario Meissner, 632, 2º andar, Jardim Botânico, Curitiba -PR, CEP:80210-170.
There is a need for further research on the value creation from both business and bottom of the pyramid perspectives. In our study, attention was given to this gap and it can be argued that partnerships between sustainable entrepreneurship ventures (SEVs) and bottom of the pyramid (BoP) communities are a relevant approach to creating sustainable value in BoP ecosystems. Accordingly, we propose to find answers to our main research question: How do partnerships between sustainable entrepreneurship ventures (SEVs) and the bottom of the pyramid (BoP) communities create sustainable values and generate benefits and opportunities for BoP? The methodology comprised three case studies of SEV-BoP partnerships in Brazil. Results indicated that SEV-BoP partnerships have the potential to deliver economic, social, and environmental values that enable progress in both businesses and low-income communities. Benefits and opportunities for BoP communities included income generation, professionalization, and business experience, which pushed the BoP communities to develop their enterprises and start new businesses independently. These results show that SEV-BoP partnerships represent an alternative approach to creating sustainable value in the BoP ecosystem, including multidirectional benefits.
Discussions on the theoretical perspective of the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP) are gaining space in research on Administration. However, an insufficient number of studies have been conducted from a more pragmatic point of view of the link between business activities in low-income markets and aspects related to sustainability. Given the identified theoretical gap, this article aims to analyze the performance of companies in the BoP and their contributions to the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability. Therefore, we developed an integrative analysis of 100 publications on BoP listed in the Web of Science database. From this we built an analytical framework, which consists of 21 criteria grouped into five categories of analysis, which indicates the existence of six typologies of enterprises, these being: traditional, appropriate, innovative, focused on mutual benefits, appropriate to the environmental dimension and directed to sustainability. For empirical verification, we developed a study of multiple cases involving five cases of companies operating in the Brazilian economic BoP and their contributions to sustainability. The empirical results show greater concern for the economic and social dimensions, reaffirming the central argument of the perspective, and less concern to environmental, highlighting the recent emphasis on this aspect. As for the main theoretical contribution, there is a proposal for a more pragmatic and unified view of these discussions, involving the categories, criteria and typologies analyzed. This may assist in the development of new researches in the area. Keywords: Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP). Sustainability. Poverty. Analysis framework.
This paper aims to characterise the relational capabilities present in the supply chain (SC) for 100% based on soybean oil biofuel usage, in the public transportation system (PTS) of Curitiba. Supply chain and relational capabilities constructs are used as theoretical foundation and a unique case study comprising the total chain of the biodiesel usage in the PTS was conducted. Data were collected from non-structured interviews with members of the upstream of the supply chain and were analysed under the perspective of each dimension and/or components of relational capabilities identified in the case. Empirical evidence from the total analysed supply chain contributes to the literature by analysing this issue from the perspective of relational capacities. The need for partners of an SC to coordinate activities, development of synergy amongst them and usage of knowledge and skills from previous experiences, demanding a joint learning consists in practical implications of this study.
Purpose -This study proposes to analyze the adaptation of ecopreneurs in each stage of the entrepreneurial life cycle.Design/methodology/approach -Based on a qualitative approach of a descriptive nature, a multiple case study was conducted comprising four entrepreneurs from environmental enterprises. The data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews and documental analysis, and analyzed using the content analysis technique.Findings -The results demonstrated that two stages demand common adaptations regardless of the context of the business, and the other one requires specific adjustments. Thus, a framework was proposed to present the adaptations ecopreneurs need to make during each stage of the entrepreneurial life cycle.Originality/value -This study is expected to contribute to the literature regarding entrepreneurs and the stages of the entrepreneurial life cycle, as well as to ecopreneurs, specifically, by providing them with empirical data regarding possible adaptations they may face during each stage of the entrepreneurial life cycle.
