Os cronistas, historiadores, demografos, os cientistas naturais ou simples viajantes que visitaram o pals desde o periodo colonial deixaram-nos informes e observagoes sobre aquele tipo de familia. Foi, porem, Gilberto Freyre quem dedicou uma atengao especial a instituigao, analisando-a desde os seus prim6rdios at6 os mais avangados estagios da sua decadencia na obra ciclica que k mesma consagrou e que se representa de modo especifico nas monografias Casa Grande e Senzala, referente ao periodo da completa predominAncia da plantation agucareira e do apogeu do patriarcalismo rural, Sobrados e Mocambos, relativa a 6poca da diversificacao da sociedade colonial com o crescimento e ascengao politica e social das populagoes urbanas, e, por ultimo, Ordem e Progresso, a analisis das mudan9as ligadas a desintegragao do sistema escravagista desde a Lei do Ventre Livre aos prim6rdios da Republica de 1889. Freyre e outros chamaran atengao para a influencia desse padrao fundamental sobre outros tipos de familia ainda existentes na sociedade brasileira.Mas pouca aten9ao se ter dado ao fato de que muitos, sinao a maioria dos oclonos portugueses durante as primeiras decadas apos a Descoberta do Brasil e ainda por muitos anos eram solteiros ou casados que migravam sem as suas familias e que frequentemente as esqueciam ou nao podiam voltar a juntar-se as mesmas na Metr6pole ou na col6nia. Aqueles aos quais Freyre chama de fundadores e colonizadores verticals do novo pais, os altos burocratas, os governadores gerais e vice-reis, os brigadeiros e capitaes mores, os senhores de engenho, particularmente, traziam comsigo suas familias de Portugal para seus novos lares nas grandes fazendas, nas fortalezas, nos palacios e mansoes das cidades da costa.
