ABSTRACT-The investigation of the conditions necessary for infants to learn conditional discrimination is a challenge due to the difficulties related to maintaining small children in experimental conditions. The objective was to teach matching identity tasks to a 12-month-old infant in a experimenter organized in a room at a daycare center. Toys used as stimuli were displayed in an apparatus consisting of three windows cutout in a box, in front of which sat an experimenter with the infant. The trials began with the opening of the windows and the display of stimuli: in the case of the selection of the stimulus defined as S+, the infant could take the toy and play, in the case of the selection of S-the windows were closed until the following trial. In the matching phase with the model, a stimulus identical to one of the comparison stimuli was first presented in the center window of the apparatus. Constant analyses of the participant's performance were carried out to manipulate the variables in force to maintain the infant in the experimental situation and to perform the proposed tasks. The discussion relates the quality of performance to the control exercised by variables such as social contact with the experimenter, alterations in the duration of tasks and variety of stimuli.
Experimental Conditions to Facilitate Infants Discrimination LearningABSTRACT -The investigation of the infant's simple and conditional discrimination learning demands an experimental planning that involves variables and appropriate situation features to population peculiarities. It was described the performances in discrimination tasks of four 12 until 24 month old infants in relation to: discrimination tasks, general conditions of the experimental procedure -to play between attempts; to play after sessions' conclusion; attempts' number or correct responses to reach learning criterion. The infants participated in one of two experiments, in a daycare center, where one apparatus to teach discrimination were located. Constant analysis of the participants' behavior allowed identifi es relations between the infants' responses and the nature of the social contact with the experimenter and the variety of stimuli with functions predicable or not in experimental planning. The manipulation of selected variables produced: the expansion of the infants' time in the experimental situation; the increase of the infants' responses directed to the apparatus and the increase of infants' correct choices.

The emotional valence of a given stimulus is more quickly identified when such stimulus is preceded by another stimulus with a congruent valence (e.g., a positive word preceded by another positive word), a phenomenon termed affective priming. The present study investigated whether affective priming occurs when chords (consonant/dissonant, high/low pitch) are used as primes, and faces (happy or sad) are used as targets. Forty undergraduate students were submitted to 64 trials divided in eight experimental conditions with eight trials each. The eight experimental conditions were half congruent and half incongruent. The congruent combinations consisted of (a) consonant/high pitch—happy, (b) consonant/low pitch—happy, (c) dissonant/high pitch—sad, and (d) dissonant/low pitch—sad, while the incongruent combinations consisted of (e) dissonant/high pitch—happy, (f) dissonant/low pitch—happy, (g) consonant/high pitch—sad, and (h) consonant/low pitch—sad. Faster responses were found in the congruent condition when compared with the incongruent one, except when the high pitch—happy face combination was presented. These results partially replicate previous findings suggesting that the salience of the target stimuli can hinder the affective priming effect, which seems consistent with the happiness superiority effect literature.
