Objective: To analyze the association of impaired functional capacity with health conditions and sociodemographic and behavioral factors among elderly residents in a community of northeastern Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional population-based study, conducted with 316 elderly residents in Lafaiete Coutinho-BA. Functional capacity was evaluated by hierarchical scaling, by verifying association with health conditions and sociodemographic and behavioral factors by the technique of multinomial logistic regression. Results: The dependence for independent activities of daily living (IADL) was associated with the age group ≥ 80 years, use of two or more medications and cognitive impairment. Dependency in basic activities of daily living and IADL was associated with those in the age group ≥ 80 years, with a lack of participation in religious activities, hospitalization in the past 12 months, cognitive impairment and who were overweight. Conclusion: There was an association with impaired functional capacity, health conditions and sociodemographic factors among elderly residents in a community in northeastern Brazil.
[Purpose] The present study aimed to clarify the effects of balance control on the pronation and supina-tion movements of the talocrural joint in community-dwelling elderly women by conducting a frequency analysis of the center of pressure during tandem stance. [Subjects and Methods] The study participants were 18 subjects who maintained tandem stance for 20 s and 11 who had difficulty maintaining tandem stance for 20 s. The frequency-power spectra were computed and classified into three frequency bands. Each power spectral value was divided by the sum of the power spectral values to obtain the %power. [Results] Significant differences in high-frequency band %power value for the center of pressure in both the mediolateral and anteroposterior components were evident between the groups. [Conclusion] A markedly significant difference was observed, particularly in high frequency band %power, depending on balance control. The present findings indicated that elderly participants with diminished balance control had difficulty with rapid adjustment centered on the ankles, suggesting that rapid joint movement involving interlimb coordination centered on the ankles is required to maintain tandem stance.
The aim was to verify the association between falls and functional capacity in the oldest old dwelling in the community. This is a community-based cross-sectional study. The population was comprised of elderly citizens aged greater than 80 years, residing in the urban area of Lafaiete Coutinho, in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Data collection was carried out in January of 2011. It was based on home life, using a questionnaire capturing sociodemographic data, fall occurrences and functional capacity utilizing the Katz scale. Data analysis was done through Poisson regression, adopting a significance level of 5%. Ninety-four elderly citizens were interviewed, with an average age of 86.1 years (±6,39); 59.6% of the participants were female. The fall prevalence was 27. 7% and 19. 6% of the participants were classified as dependent for activities of daily living. A strong association was identified between falls and functional activities (RP=2.08; 1.17 - 3.70). Results showed a significantly higher proportion of falls among the functionally dependent oldest old than among the independent elderly.
