Objective: To analyze the association of impaired functional capacity with health conditions and sociodemographic and behavioral factors among elderly residents in a community of northeastern Brazil. Methods: A cross-sectional population-based study, conducted with 316 elderly residents in Lafaiete Coutinho-BA. Functional capacity was evaluated by hierarchical scaling, by verifying association with health conditions and sociodemographic and behavioral factors by the technique of multinomial logistic regression. Results: The dependence for independent activities of daily living (IADL) was associated with the age group ≥ 80 years, use of two or more medications and cognitive impairment. Dependency in basic activities of daily living and IADL was associated with those in the age group ≥ 80 years, with a lack of participation in religious activities, hospitalization in the past 12 months, cognitive impairment and who were overweight. Conclusion: There was an association with impaired functional capacity, health conditions and sociodemographic factors among elderly residents in a community in northeastern Brazil. O objetivo deste estudo foi estimar a prevalência do fenótipo cintura hipertrigliceridêmica (FCH) em participantes do Estudo Longitudinal da Saúde do Adulto (ELSA-Brasil), identificar fatores de risco associados e comparar com outros indicadores de risco cardiovascular e metabólico. Trata-se de um estudo transversal com dados da linha de base de uma coorte de servidores públicos. O FCH é definido pela presença simultânea de circunferência da cintura (CC) aumentada (≥ 80cm para mulheres, ≥ 90cm para homens de acordo com a Federação Internacional de Diabetes - IDF; e ≥ 88cm para mulheres, ≥ 102cm para homens de acordo com o Programa Nacional de Educação sobre o Colesterol dos Estados Unidos - NCEP) e hipertrigliceridemia. A associação entre as variáveis independentes e FCH foi testada por meio de modelos de regressão logística multivariada. O FCH foi comparado também com outros indicadores de risco cardiovascular e metabólico por meio de testes de correlação, índice kappa, sensibilidade e especificidade. Após exclusões, foram analisados 12.811 participantes. A prevalência do FCH variou de 24,7% (IDF) a 13,3% (NCEP). FCH foi associado a ter idade mais avançada, ao consumo excessivo de álcool, ser ex-fumante, apresentar HDL baixo, não-HDL alto e PCR aumentado, independente do sexo ou critério de definição. FCH associou-se a indicadores de risco cardiovascular, especialmente à síndrome metabólica. A elevada prevalência de FCH e sua associação com indicadores de risco cardiovascular, especialmente com a síndrome metabólica, apoia sua utilização como ferramenta de triagem de risco cardiometabólico na prática clínica.

The study objectives were to investigate the indicators of obesity most associated with high blood pressure in community-dwelling elderly and identify among these which one best discriminates high blood pressure. This is an epidemiological, population, cross-sectional and home-based study of elderly people (≥ 60 years, n = 316) residing in northeastern Brazil. The results showed that the body mass index and the body adiposity index were the indicators more closely associated with high blood pressure in both sexes. Both in female and male genders, body mass index showed high values of specificity and low sensitivity values for discriminating high blood pressure, whereas the body adiposity index showed high sensitivity and moderate specificity values. In clinical practice and health surveillance, it is suggested that both indicators be used as screening tools for hypertension in the elderly.

A statistically significant increase in SCD risk of 29.2% was observed during the winter (p=0.017; OR 1.45 IC95% [1.07-1.96]), compared with other seasons. The comparison of the mean concentrations of PM10 and TSP between the days with and without SCD as well as one day before the onset of SCD had note significantly lower concentrations. No statistically significant difference in mean temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure and others pollutants between days with and without SCD was found. Conclusion Some environmental parameters may predispose to the onset of SCD. Understanding their accurate influence may have preventive and curative implications

This study aims to assess the non-additivity effects of gender, race, and schooling on ideal cardiovascular health among participants of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Adult Health - ELSA-Brasil. This is a cross-sectional study using data from the baseline of ELSA-Brasil, conducted from 2008 to 2010. The American Heart Association defined a score of ideal cardiovascular health (ICH) as the sum of indicators for the presence of seven favorable health factors and behaviors: non-smoking, ideal body mass index, physical activity and healthy diet, adequate levels of total cholesterol, normal blood pressure, and absence of diabetes mellitus. Multiplicative and additive interactions between gender, race, and schooling were assessed using the Poisson regression model to discuss intersectionality. The mean cardiovascular health score was 2.49 (SD = 1.31). This study showed a positive interaction between gender and schooling (women with high school and higher education) in both additive and multiplicative scales for the score of ideal cardiovascular health. We observed a trend towards higher mean values of cardiovascular health for increased schooling, with a marked difference among women. The lowest cardiovascular health scores observed reinforce the importance of understanding the psychosocial experiences that influence health attitudes, access to health care, and healthy lifestyle choices, which affect ICH, to reduce inequities in health and propose more adequate public policies that assist and prevent cardiovascular diseases.
