A crescente industrialização e urbanização no Brasil, no último século, trouxeram consigo algumas problemáticas a respeito da interação homem/meio ambiente.Dentre elas pode-se citar a necessidade de destinar corretamente os resíduos sólidos urbanos (RSU) a fim de minimizar os impactos à saúde humana e a natureza. Os RSU são aqueles gerados nas residências, nos estabelecimentos comerciais e nas mais diversas atividades desenvolvidas em uma cidade, com exceção dos resíduos gerados nos serviços de saúde, portos e aeroportos, pois estes têm destinação especial (BOSCOV, 2008). Segundo o Panorama Nacional dos Resíduos Sólidos (ABRELPE, 2017), os números referentes à geração de RSU revelam um total anual de 78,4 milhões de toneladas no país e, em média, é gerado 1,035 kg de lixo por dia por habitante. Dos resíduos coletados, cerca de 59,1% são dispostos em aterros sanitários e 40,9% são despejados em locais inadequados, lixões ou aterros controlados, que não possuem o conjunto de sistemas e medidas necessárias para proteção do meio ambiente, com danos diretos à saúde de milhões de pessoas. Os lixões encerrados, objetos deste estudo, se encontram nas cidades de Santo Antônio de Pádua (RJ) e Niterói (RJ). O primeiro esteve ativo por 20 anos (de 1998 a 2018), recebendo uma média de 36 toneladas de resíduos por dia. Já o lixão do Morro do Céu, na cidade de Niterói, estudado por RIGHI (2017), esteve ativo por 30 anos (de 1983 a 2013), a cidade em questão produz cerca de 700 toneladas de lixo diariamente
