Various vibration phenomena of buildings occurred in recent earthquakes. Some of them were very complicated and might be caused by unknown structure-structure interactions through foundations and/or ground soil.
The aim of this research is to investigate such complicated structure-structure interaction by numerical simulation. After formulating the problem mathematically, we develop a simulation algorithm for linear elastic bodies that have distributional material constants. As for the discretization procedure, we adopt the finite element method (FEM) combined with the perfectly matched layer (PML) technique.
Using the algorithm, we succeeded in computing several interesting phenomena of frequency response of the system caused by structure-structure interaction.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
