Objectives: To verify the effects of the technique of muscle inhibition in individuals with Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). Methods: A longitudinal, interventional, exploratory, comparative study was conducted of seven female subjects with a mean age of 42.8 (± 19.12) years. Participants were submitted to an active muscle inhibition technique until muscle relaxation occurred. We analyzed pain intensity, range of motion and bite force. Results: The pain decreased after use of the technique(p 0.01) from 6.3 to 2.3; the range of motion showed gains in the opening (p=0.04) and an increase by 2 mm of right laterality(p=0.01) and left laterality (p=0.01), while protrusion was not affected (p=0.35). The bite force increased by 13 mmHg after the use of the technique(p 0.01). Conclusion: The technique of muscle inhibition was responsible for significant reductions in the frequency and intensity of kinesiological episodes and in changes of the functional conditions of patients with TMD.
PALAVRAS-ChAVE:Envelhecimento; Saúde do Idoso; Sexualidade. SEXUALIT Y IN ELDERLY PEOPLE PARTICIPATING IN COMPANIONShIP GROUPSABSTRACT: Aging may be defined as a consequent process of alterations in the organism in a variable and individual manner. Elderly groups are possible exchange and interaction spaces between people of the same generation. Elderly people have a possibility of forming new relationships and new ways of partaking knowledge with other people through companionship groups. Current exploratory, descriptive and quantitative-qualitative analysis identifies how elderly people who participate in a companionship group perceive sexuality. The demographic cross-section of the elderly analyzed is characterized by 60% (n=9) widows, 53.3% (n=8) have incomplete basic schooling, 80% (n=12) are practicing Catholics; moreover, 53.3% (n=8) report that sexuality is not openly discussed in the family; 40% (n=6) state that sex is very important; 13.3% (n=2) report having sex. Elderly females admit sex is important and relevant in their lives. KEY WORDS:Aging; Health of the Elderly; Sexuality. Objective: To determine the incidence of preterm newborn infants in mechanical ventilation who developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia in a public hospital at Fortaleza/CE. Method: Descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal quantitative analysis with 1250 preterm infants admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, Dr. César Cals General Hospital, at Fortaleza, from July 2006 to June 2007. Data collection occurred during two months, with visits to units twice a week, where the medical records were done. Were included in these sample newborns that were in mechanical ventilation and developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Then the gestational average was 28.6 weeks; the mean weight of infants was 1125.33 grams, born vaginally or cesarean section, of both sexes and with various primary diseases such as respiratory distress syndrome, jaundice and neonatal infection. Results: In the sample from the total admissions, 34.48% were for mechanical ventilation and 3.48% developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia. Conclusion: Despite the low prevalence, bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a important complication of prematurity, directly related to the duration of mechanical ventilation, thus the team must be committed on weaning and extubation of those as soon as possible, preferably within the first week of life.
