Solving mathematical situation-problems is a major challenge for at-risk students. In this article, we analyze an assistance system tested by a second-cycle elementary school teacher. This system consists of setting up an auxiliary educational system (AES), in the form of a work session with students presumed to be having trouble, two days before the students are asked to solve a situation-problem in class. Within this AES, the teacher explains the situation-problem and asks the students to think about what they will do in class two days later. We identified four potential functions of this system. (1) A chronogenetic function, which manifests through the extra time given to at-risk students and the opportunity to get acquainted with the problem before it comes up in the classroom, (2) A topogenetic function, which could help at-risk students take on their position as students, (3) a mesogenetic function, which gives them the opportunity to get acquainted with the parameters of the situation-problem and (4) a dialectic between the suspension and anticipation of action. We present what these potential functions involve and investigate the viability conditions of this auxiliary educational system. Time is a constraint but also a condition of operating within a didactic system. Don't we need to distinguish several kinds of times? Our study will focus on teachers' time management strategies. We will identify these strategies by taking into account two temporal dimensions -didactic time and time capital -and the rate at which the former advances relative to the latter, called the pace of an activity, a lesson or a teaching sequence. Those strategies have been identified in the specific context of the integration of the Cabri-geometry dynamic geometry software in the daily work of a French primary school.
Functions of two auxiliary educational systems aiming to support students with difficulties during mathematical problem solving. Solving mathematical problems is a major challenge for students with difficulties. In this article, we examine an assistance system tested by an elementary school teacher during a two-year collaborative research. This system consists of setting up two auxiliary educational systems (AES), in the form of a work session with the students presumed by the teacher to be having trouble, that is held prior to the solving of the problem with the whole class and another work session held after the solving of the problem. Within the AES, the teacher explains the problem to the students, and discusses concepts with the student regarded as prerequisites by the teacher. In the AES held after the solving of the problem, the teacher revisits the institutionalisation made with the whole class. In this article, we analyze the potential functions of our assistance system through the triple dimensions identified by Sensevy et al. (2000): Chronogenesis, mesogenesis and topogenesis.Résumé.
