O género, enquanto categoria de análise da realidade, é um recurso valioso para a «agenda» da investigação científica nas diversas áreas do conhecimento. E, se o fim último da ciência é contribuir para a melhoria da qualidade de vida das pessoas, importa usar os recursos de que a comunidade científica dispõe para identificar os problemas, dando-lhes visibilidade. Espera-se que a sua análise credível possa trazer contributos para a intervenção, seja ao nível das teorias, das práticas e/ou das políticas públicas que gerem a vida democrática.O acesso ao conhecimento, quer através do ensino formal, quer por iniciativas não formais de promoção dos níveis de literacia das pessoas, qualquer que seja a sua idade, assume um papel incontornável no combate às desigualdades. É verdade que a garantia de acesso à escola -entendida em sentido lato -, por si, não resolve os dilemas sociais, mas as pessoas com menos oportunidades de domínio de conhecimentos que se adquirem para além do vivido tendem a ser mais pobres, mais propensas a sofrer atropelos aos seus direitos e a ser mais vulneráveis em situações que exijam autonomia de decisão.Convocando o género e a educação para a sua relação com o exercício da cidadania, sabe-se que pessoas e grupos continuam a ser protagonistas e/ou víti-mas de discriminação velada e explícita, seja por razões ligadas a um pensamento essencialista e binário, que acentua dissemelhanças e fomenta hierarquias, seja porque a diferença é vista como «desvio» do tradicional ou do normativo. Tal como escreveu Madalena Barbosa, «enquanto não se reconhecer uma discriminação, não se pode combatê-la» (2008, 89). É aqui que entra a ciência, no seu papel
