Die japanischen Danen, die einen grol3en Teil der Kt~sten des Insel-Reiches besetzen (Karte I), unterscheiden sich auffallend yon den meisten europ~iischen und n-amerikanischen Danen derselben Breiten: Der Sand, der sie aufbaut, ist aufvielen Strecken, ~ihnlich wie auf Island, vulkanischer Herkunft und daher hellgrau, oder bei feuchtem Wetter fast schw~irzlich-grau gef~trbt. Seine Anh~tufung zu Dt~nen wird im mittleren und s0dlichen Japan nicht durch Rhizom-Grfiser bewirkt, sondern eine salztolerante Cyperacee, Carex kobomugil), (ira Norden Hokkaidos auch Carex macrocephala), tritt als erster Dt~nenbildner auf. Nur im n6rdlichen Japan beteiligt sich, ~ihnlich wie im n6rdlichen Europa, ein hochwiichsiges Rhizom-Gras (Elymus mollis) am Aufbau der Diinen.Klimatische Unterschiede bedingen die Ausbildung verschiedener Diinen-Gesellschaften im Norden und im Siiden des Landes, denen stark voneinander abweichende Endstufen der Sukzession entsprechen.Wir folgen in unserer Schilderung der japanischen D~nen-Vegetation der Zonierung und Sukzession vom Strand mit seinen Spfils~iumen bis zu den ~iltesten Diinen, indem wir die einzelnen Zonen nacheinander schildern und dabei jeweils ihre geographischen Abwandlungen yon S nach N darstellen.Die Pflanzengesellschaften der japanischen Diinen sind im ganzen eher noch arten~irmer als diejenigen Europas. Vor allem gibt es in Japan weder kryptogamen-noch zwergstrauchreiche Gesellschaften wie an der atlantischen Kfiste Europas das Koelerion albescentis Tx. 1937 oder am Mittelmeer das Crucianellion maritimae Rivas Goday et Rivas Martinez (1958) 1963. Nur die Waldgesellschaften der Dtinen sind in Japan sehr artenreieh. Dtinen-w~ilder fehlen in Europa heute allerdings fast ganz, so dab Vergleiche nieht leicht anzustellen sind.

ANNUELLE SPOLSAUM-GESELLSCHAFTEN JAPANSDas Meer hinterl/iBt im Winter oder nach herbstlichen Taifunen auf dem oberen Strand Spfils/iume organischer Massen (Zostera, Algen, Holz, Tierleichen usw.). Sie finden sich sowohl an sandigen Str~tnden teilweise vom Sande begraben, aber aueh an anderen Flachkfisten und tragen vor den Dfinen eine meist offene, an Therophyten reiche Vegetation, die oftmals so locker w~ichst, dab sie kaum als "Gesellschaft" bezeichnet werden kann.Auf weiten Strecken wachsen nur einzelne Individuen von 6kologisch und verbreitungsbiologisch verwandten Kommensalen, die an vielen Orten noch kein echtes soziologisches Wirkungsgeffige bilden. Andererseits kommen die gleichen Artenverbindungen bei gfinstigen Wuchsbedingungen (Verbreitungsm6glichkeiten, N/ihrstoffe, Windschutz) auch in fast geschlossenen Best~inden vor.
