ResumoAspidosperma excelsum Benth. Theobroma species have economic importance due to their use in the cosmetic and food industries, mainly in the production of chocolate. However, the anatomy of their vegetative structures remains poorly studied. The goal of this study was to describe the anatomical features of Theobroma grandiflorum, T. speciosum and T. subincanum to contribute to the biological knowledge of these species, as well as provide support to the biotechnological studies of native fruit plants of the Amazon. Leaves at different developmental stages were collected and analyzed under light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Sessile and stalked stellate trichomes and digitiform glandular trichomes were observed in the expanded leaves of T. grandiflorum and T. subincanum. These species were also similar in the morphology of the midrib, the organization of the mesophyll and the presence of starch grains in the midrib pith cells. Claviform glandular trichomes and mucilage cells in the epidermis occurred only in the expanded leaves of T. speciosum. The presence of mucilage secretory trichomes in shoot apices (colleters) of all species is a new finding for the genus Theobroma. KEYWORDS: colleters, cupuassu, glandular trichomes, mucilage, stellate trichomes.
To do so, samples of the leaf blade and of nodal regions were fixed and examined using histological and scanning electron microscope techniques. Histochemical tests with appropriate controls were carried out on the secretory structures during the secretory phase. Fly and ant individuals that visit the species were sampled, preserved and identified by an entomologist. The secretory structures of the vegetative aerial axis of M. standleyi are peltate and patelliform glandular trichomes. All develop asynchronously and are present in the nodal regions and leaf blade, mainly in their youngest parts. Trichomes form a secretory complex in the nodal regions while they are scattered in the leaf blade. Histochemical analyses revealed that the cupulate and patelliform trichomes are extrafloral nectaries and that the peltate ones present an alkaloid fraction. The visitors of the nodal glands are ants Crematogaster (Formicidae) and Ectatomma brunea (Vespoidea, Formicidae) and flies Oxysarcodexia (Sarcophagidae, subfamily Utitidae [Ulidiidae]). The secretory structures of the vegetative aerial axis of Mansoa standleyi are similar to those reported for Bignoniaceae. An extrafloral nectary is described for M. standleyi for the first time. (Asteraceae).Ayapanatriplinervis (Asteraceae), also known as "Japana branca" and "Japana roxa" in Brazil, is a medicinal herb from the Amazon used as tonic, digestive, antidiarrheal, among others. This study aimed to characterize the morphoanatomy of the aerial vegetative axis of A. triplinervis to corroborate that this species has morphotypes, in order to provide data for their identification. Samples were collected in the Garden of Medicinal Plants of the Federal Rural University of Amazônia and Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, and they were analyzed morphologically and by the standardtechniques of plant anatomy. The stem is cylindrical, white or purple, with uniseriate epidermis, trichomes and endoderm with starch sheath and Casparian strips. The leaves are simple, opposite, with attenuate or arising basis; they have anomocytic stomata, epicuticular wax plates or granules, pearl glands, dorsiventral mesophyll with collateral vascular bundles and secretory ducts. Ayapana triplinervis showed different morphoanatomical features betweenthe white and purple types, which enablesthe distinction between the two morphotypes.
Nodal glands are found in one third of the Polygalaceae genera and have valuable taxonomic, ecological and evolutionary significance. In Brazil, they occur in five of the eleven genera already registered. However, there is still a controversy regarding the origin of these structures. The objective of this study was to characterize the morphology and the origin of nodal glands in Caamembeca spectabilis, in order to increase the structural and functional knowledge of these glands in the genera. Samples of nodal regions were collected, fixed and processed according to the methods of light microscopy and electron scanning. Ants were observed and identified along the stem axis. The glucose in exudate allows us to classify these glands as extrafloral nectaries. They are located in pairs on the nodal region. However, its origin is in the leaf trace. In the longitudinal section, the nectaries were present in the apex of cells with anticlinal walls impregnated with suberin, which represents the first record for the family. In this region there is also the formation of a hole by lysis. The secretory tissue is surrounded by phloem. Xylem vessels were observed only on the basis of the nectary, where there are also idioblasts with crystals in druse type. We have studied the ontogeny of the glands nodal in Caamembeca spectabilis and unveiled that these glands are linked to the leaves as stipular nectaries. In addition, the new findings presented here may add support for the understanding of morphology and anatomy of nodal glands in Caamembeca. KEYWORDS: Fabales, extrafloral nectaries, vascularization, suberin, ants.
Coryanthes is one of the most fascinating genera of Stanhopeinae (Orchidaceae) because of its complex pollination mechanism and the peculiar structures of its flowers. Although Coryanthes macrantha (Hook.) Hook. is widely studied, investigation of the secretory structures and floral biology is important to understand the mechanisms and ecology of pollination, which deserve attention despite the difficulties of collecting fertile material in nature. We conducted a morpho-anatomical analysis of the floral and extrafloral secretory structures of Coryanthes macrantha to better understand the secretory structures, contribute to the knowledge of its floral biology and/or pollination processes, and understand the ecological function of these structures. The analysis revealed that C. macrantha has epidermal osmophores with unicellular papillae that were foraged by male Eulaema bees, floral nectaries in the sepals, and extrafloral nectaries in the bracts. In both the floral and extrafloral nectaries, the nectar is exuded by the stomata. Azteca ants foraged the bract and sepal nectaries in pre-anthesis and post-anthesis. We also described the secretory epidermis of pleuridia, and the mode of secretion of osmophores and nectaries and found that they attract specific foraging agents.
A nervura central é biconvexa e o sistema vascular distingue as duas espécies.
