Introducción: el desarrollo de aplicaciones móviles en el campo de la salud ha tenido un gran auge, del cual no ha sido ajeno el cuidado de la salud visual. Objetivo: realizar una revisión de la literatura publicada entre 2013 y 2019, referente al diseño y desarrollo de aplicaciones para dispositivos móviles que tengan respaldo en publicaciones científicas, y que pueden apoyar en el ejercicio profesional de la optometría y la oftalmología. Metodología: revisión de literatura de artículos en español e inglés, publicados entre 2013 y 2019, en las bases de datos, en la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud, Medline, Ebsco, Pubmed, Science Direct, Scopus, SciELO, Embase, Springer Journal, Dialnet. Las palabras clave que se usaron para la búsqueda fueron: mhealth, visual health, teleoptometry, e-health, TIC, mobile application visual health, online learning optrometry, mobile optometry technology. Resultados: se evidenciaron pocas aplicaciones en el área de salud visual que estuvieran soportadas en publicaciones científicas. La mayoría de las aplicaciones encontradas son prototipos y aún no han sido utilizadas por los usuarios. Conclusiones: las aplicaciones pueden llegar a transformar la atención en salud visual; sin embargo, falta aún mayor investigación y desarrollo de este tipo de herramientas. La cooperación entre optómetras, oftalmólogos e ingenieros de sistemas es necesaria para impulsar su desarrollo
