BP therapy could have a negative influence on the determinants of oral health in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
The analysis of 12 X-STR loci included in the Investigator® Argus X-12 kit was performed on a sample of 325 unrelated persons from Vojvodina Province, Republic of Serbia. No significant differences were observed in the allele frequencies in males and females. Heterozygosity values among the studied loci ranged from 67.62 to 94.28%. All loci in female individuals were consistent with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium test. The combined power of discrimination values in male and female individuals was 0.9999999994 and 0.999999999999999, respectively. The combined mean exclusion chance was 0.999998 in deficiency cases, 0.9999999977 in normal trio cases, and 0.9999994 in duo cases. Loci DXS10135 and DXS10101 were found to be most polymorphic. The haplotype diversity was found to be greater than 0.993 for all linkage groups. The exact test for pairwise linkage disequilibrium for the 12 loci in the male samples showed significant linkage disequilibrium for the DXS10103-DXS10101 and DXS10134-DXS10146 pairs of loci. The results from the current study confirmed that the panel of 12 X-STR loci is highly polymorphic and informative and can be implemented as a powerful tool in deficient paternity testing and kinship analysis, as well as a useful complement tool of autosomal short tandem repeats (STRs) in forensic investigation. Population differentiation analyses indicated significant differences in genetic structure between the Serbian population and the geographically and ethno-linguistically distant populations, while genetic homogeneity was present in populations with similar geographic origin.
Chronic periodontitis is a common complication in diabetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate some clinical and microbiological parameters in controlled and uncontrolled type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM) patients compared to non-diabetic (NDM) individuals, as well as to assess the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on these parameters. The study was performed in 61 type 2 DM patients with periodontitis (group 1A: 29 patients having achieved good metabolic control, HbA1c <7%; group 1B: 32 patients with poor metabolic control, HbA1c ≥7%), and 31 NDM individuals suffering from periodontitis. Periodontal indices (plaque index, PI; gingival index, GI; probing pocket depth, PPD; and clinical attachment level, CAL) were measured and subgingival plaque samples were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction prior to treatment initiation and 3 months post-treatment. The results recorded on the majority of measured parameters indicated that differences in treatment success achieved in the three treatment groups were not statistically significant (∆PI p=0.646; ∆GI p=0.303; and ∆CAL p=0.233). Likewise, comparison of the effectiveness in microorganism reduction revealed no significant differences between DM groups and NDM patients. Therefore, study results supported the hypothesis that periodontal therapy outcome was unaffected by the level of glycemic control in patients with diabetes.
The degree of polymerization for dimethacrylate resin-based materials (BisGMA, TEGDMA, UDMA, HEMA) ranges from 55 to 75%. Literature data indicate that polymerization efficacy depends, among other factors, on the type of methacrylate resin comprising the material. The aim of this study was to evaluate the polymerization efficacy of four dental cement materials characterized by different polymerization mechanisms using FTIR analysis. In the present study, the FTIR method was adopted to analyze the degree of polymerization efficacy of four resin-based dental cement materials, two of which were self-cured and two were dual-cured cements. The IR spectral analysis was performed 24 h after the polymerization of the cementitious material. RelyX ARC cement exhibits the lowest polymerization efficacy (61.3%), while that of Variolink II (85.8%) and Maxcem Elite is the highest (90.1%). Although the efficacy of self-cured cements appears to be superior, the difference is not statistically significant (p = 0.280). Polymerization efficacy largely depends on the chemical structure of the material in terms of the presence of a particular methacrylate resin and less on the polymerization mechanism itself, i.e., whether it is a self-cured or dually cured dental cement. Thus, in clinical practice, cementitious materials with a higher proportion of TEGDMA compared with BisGMA are recommended.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
