El año 1988 marca el inicio del Sistema de Medición de la Calidad de la Educación (SIMCE) en Chile. En 30 años, esta política ha cobrado creciente protagonismo en la organización de la educación escolar. Considerada a fines de la dictadura pieza clave en promover competencia escolar, se le ha defendido en democracia como un instrumento técnico vital para asegurar calidad escolar vía entrega de información con foco pedagógico. Este ensayo argumenta que la defensa del SIMCE en tanto mero instrumento técnico de aseguramiento de la calidad educacional ha permitido el ocultamiento de una de sus funciones principales: generar competencia entre escuelas.
