IntroduçãoA cárie é uma doença multifatorial e, apesar de sua prevalência estar declinando nas diferentes faixas etárias, é considerada um relevante problema de saúde pública 1 . Conforme dados do Ministério da Saúde, no Brasil, aos 5 anos de idade, uma criança possui em média 2,43 dentes com experiência de cá-rie, sendo que o componente cariado é responsável por mais de 80% do índice e é a maior causa de dor dental, podendo afetar o crescimento e interferir na qualidade de vida das crianças 2,3 . Atualmente, uma das formas mais amplas da utilização do flúor é o emprego de dentifrícios fluoretados, sendo a substância mais importante presente no creme dental, aumentando o efeito de escovação mecânica sobre o controle da cárie dentária 4 . Os dentifrícios fluoretados contribuem aproximadamente com 57% da quantidade de flúor ingerida diariamente por crianças de 4 a 6 anos de idade. Isso acontece especialmente em pré-escolares, devido à inabilidade dessas crianças cuspirem todo o dentifrício 5 . Portanto, algumas medidas são necessá-rias para controlar a ingestão de fluoreto, como optar por aqueles que não seduzem a criança pelo sabor e diminuir a quantidade aplicada na escova dental 6 . Pendrys et al. 7 (2010) verificaram uma pequena relação entre o modo que algumas crianças realizavam a escovação e a incidência de fluorose. Constataram que as crianças que colocavam dentifrício na metade ou mais das cerdas da escova apresentavam frequências mais elevadas de fluorose leve. Martins
Objetivo: discutir reabilitação de um caso clínico de avulsão precoce de dentes decíduos com fratura mandibular unilateral ocorrida após uma queda de três metros de altura. Relato de caso: paciente do gênero masculino, leucoderma, 2 anos e 5 meses de idade, apresentou-se na emergência do Hospital São Vicente de Paulo na cidade de Passo Fundo - RS com história de queda da laje da casa que estava em reforma. Ao exame físico intraoral, observou-se ausência dos elementos dentários 51 e 61, equimose em região mandibular unilateral e fratura mandibular. Como tratamento adotado utilizou-se um mantedor de espaço estético-funcional após a redução da fratura mandibular. Considerações finais: a ausência dos padrões de sorriso das crianças influencia a saúde e qualidade oral de vida de duas maneiras, no aspecto psicológico que inclui autopercepção da criança do seu próprio sorriso e o aspecto social que inclui a utilização do sorriso para demonstração de sentimentos. No caso relatado, o paciente embora jovem valorizava a questão estética e solicitou a reabilitação, fator importante a ser considerado, pois a autoimagem e a autoestima estão em formação e se não bem trabalhadas podem trazer consequências psicológicas para a vida adulta.
Objetivo: analisar a literatura pertinente sobre diagnóstico do bruxismo infantil, a fim de auxiliar o cirurgião-dentista em como detectar esta condição. Materiais e métodos: através das bases de dados PubMed, SciELO e Lilacs, com termos específicos, foi revisada a literatura e realizada a seleção de artigos mais relevantes, por dois examinadores independentes. Os critérios incluíram crianças com bruxismo, de 0 a 12 anos, independentemente de sexo, ano ou contexto geográfico. Resultados: inicialmente, 1.409 artigos foram identificados. Após a exclusão de duplicatas, avaliação dos títulos, resumos e textos completos, foram selecionados 42 artigos. Uma tabela foi delineada para extrair dados e através desta foram mapeados os estudos. Questionários/ relatos dos responsáveis foram os métodos mais utilizados para diagnóstico de bruxismo infantil, relatados na literatura, 21 artigos, e associados com exame clínico, 16 artigos. A polissonografia foi utilizada em 5 artigos, sendo 2 exclusivamente, 1 em revisão sistemática e 2 associados com questionário aos responsáveis. Os indicadores da Associação Americana de Medicina do Sono (AASM) foram utilizados em 9 artigos. Conclusão: a associação entre exame clínico/relato dos responsáveis, com critérios específicos, sugere uma boa conduta para o cirurgião-dentista, embora a polissonografia seja considerada o método padrão-ouro, pois independe de condições financeiras e manejo, principalmente por se tratar de crianças.
