Este trabalho teve como principal objetivo identificar e analisar características materiais das oficinas ferroviárias construídas no estado de São Paulo no período entre 1860 e 1930. A pesquisa se justifica pela importância desse tipo de edificação e pela grande lacuna de estudos nacionais em relação à arquitetura industrial, principalmente relacionados às oficinas ferroviárias. Para o levantamento, foram priorizadas as companhias de maior relevância econômica e as que dispunham de maior número de documentação. Foram consultados relatórios administrativos de algumas companhias férreas paulistas a fim de identificar a localização de suas oficinas e tratados ferroviários do século XIX para compreender alguns aspectos da espacialização das oficinas e bibliografia nacional especializada em arquitetura industrial e ferroviária. Este trabalho resultou em um mapa de localização das oficinas encontradas, através do qual foi possível identificar questões referentes à implantação, composição arquitetônica, materiais e alguns fornecedores estrangeiros.
O presente texto tem por finalidade analisar como se deu a construção das oficinas ferroviárias da Companhia Paulista em Jundiaí, São Paulo. O recorte temporal é limitado ao século XIX, compreendendo os anos entre 1892 e 1896, período em que foi construída a edificação original. Esse tipo de estudo se justifica pelo fato de que as oficinas de Jundiaí detinham uma construção singular para o período em comparação com as demais estruturas do tipo existentes no estado de São Paulo. Por meio da observação visual e do conhecimento de bibliografia específica, foram analisados elementos como implantação, materiais, sistemas, aberturas e ornamentos. A partir dessa análise, pode-se ampliar o conhecimento sobre algumas das técnicas construtivas utilizadas, além de elucidar aspectos do patrimônio industrial edificado.
A vida profissional de David Lowenthal é marcada pela interdisciplinaridade: foi professor em diferentes universidades nos cursos de História, Geografia, Arquitetura, Ciências Sociais e Psicologia. Foi também conselheiro sobre Patrimônio na Organização das Nações Unidas para a Educação, a Ciência e a Cultura (Unesco) e hoje é professor emérito de Geografia na University College de Londres.É de fundamental importância para compreensão do pensamento do autor, o qual se reflete no livro, a contextualização de sua formação e a corrente de pensamento na qual se insere. David Lowhenthal é pós--graduado na Universidade da Califórnia, onde nas primeiras décadas do século XX Carl Ortwin Sauer funda a Escola de Geografia Histórico-Cultural, a Escola de Berkeley. Numa visão tradicional, a escola fundada por Sauer destaca a importância das formas da paisagem, uma vez que formas e marcas são deixadas nela pelo homem e por sua cultura. Após a Segunda Guerra Mundial despontam novas formas de pensar a ciência, e novos métodos surgem, fugindo do racionalismo tradicional. É nesse contexto que surge a corrente Humanista, com destaque para os estudos de Yi-Fu Tuan. A corrente Humanista diz que as ações do homem não podem estar desassociadas de seu contexto, valorizando, então, o espaço vivido, as experiên-cias e a percepção. Não por acaso, são esses os aspectos valorizados por Lowenthal no livro em questão.The past is a foreign country, lançado originalmente em 1985, fala sobre as percepções do homem em relação ao passado e como ele tem afetado a sociedade. É composto por sete capítulos, divididos em três partes, nas quais a primeira se preocupa em explicar as razões que nos impulsionam a recuperar o passado, a segunda exibe os meios de acesso ao passado e a terceira explica as modificações que ele sofre. Por se tratar de um assunto complexo, o autor recorreu a diversas referências bibliográficas para apresentar as diversas faces do tema, contanto com mais de 2.100 citações.No primeiro capítulo "Reliving the past: dreams and nightmares", o autor inicia explicando a paixão mundial pelo passado, exibindo vários motivos pelos quais as pessoas desejam retornar no tempo. Um desses motivos seria explicá-lo. Nesse caso, adverte Lowenthal, toda a humanidade teria que retornar no tempo, uma vez que a observação de um fato ocorrido traz consigo todas as percepções do observador, deixando de ser fiel ao ocorrido. O autor também destaca que o futuro incerto e desconhecido deixa o passado confortável a todos, pois é originalmente a "casa" a qual estão todos familiarizados, e estar desvinculado dessa "casa" desperta uma sensação deprimente de desamparo, nomeada nesse capítulo como nostalgia.O segundo capítulo "Benefits and burdens of the past", como o próprio nome declara, trata sobre o impacto do passado no presente apresentando o seu lado positivo e negativo. Dentre tantos benefícios que Lowenthal atribui ao passado, pode-se dizer que todos detêm uma característica implícita: significar o presente. O presente busca nos acontecimentos passados ...
O presente artigo tem por finalidade investigar questões sumárias sobre as obras de arte ferroviárias, especificamente as pontes do século XIX da Companhia Paulista, estudando seus materiais, sistemas construtivos e profissionais envolvidos na construção. A investigação se justifica pelo fato das obras de arte se mostrarem semelhantes às demais estruturas ferroviárias, se tornando passíveis de maiores investigações no que compete ao campo da arquitetura e da engenharia. Foram consultados os relatórios administrativos da companhia, plantas, fotografias e bibliografias específicas. Efetuado um levantamento inicial de pontes da Companhia Paulista, compreendeu-se o motivo da utilização de determinados materiais bem como sua relação com questões econômicas e profissionais disponíveis.
