BackgroundEndometriosis is a disorder in which an ectopic endometrial tissue grows outside the uterine cavity. The ectopic endometrium embedded in the subcutaneous fatty layer and the muscles of abdominal wall is called as abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE). AWE is a rare condition; however, it is usually known to develop along with previous surgical scars. Caesarean section and hysterectomy are considered to be commonly associated with the development of AWE.MethodsWe evaluated the data of the patients who underwent AWE surgery between March 2009 and March 2014.ResultsThe mean age of the patients was 32.5 years. We found a previous history of caesarean section in all of the patients. The most frequent symptoms of the patients were abdominal mass sensation and abdominal pain. Invasion of endometriosis to fat layer, fascia, muscular layer, and peritoneum was recorded. Three masses were located within the scar regions.ConclusionsWe can conclude that there is a high prevalence of caesarean sections among the women with AWE.
Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common tumor type in the salivary gland. PA is uncommon in the breast tissue. Only 73 cases of PA of the breast have been reported in the world literature. We are reporting the 74th case of PA of the breast. A 61-year-old woman was referred to Shahid Beheshti Hospital Obstetric Clinic with bloody painless discharge from the right nipple. A bean size mass was detected immediately below the right nipple. After an excisional biopsy, the pathologist found proliferation in epithelial and myoepithelial cells that had small and multiple nuclei, myxoid and chondroid stroma. Immunohistochemistry stain was positive for S-100 and patchy for GFAP in tumor cells and for SMA around the tubule-glandular and tumor cell aggregates and suggested PA of the breast. It is essential for the pathologists to consider PA of the breast as a differential diagnosis of a rounded circumscribed mass in the juxta-areolar areas. Careful paraffin sections should be performed to avoid an unnecessary mastectomy.
BackgroundSurvivin is a newly found member of the inhibitors of apoptosis proteins, which plays a certain role in cancer. Survivin has a distinctly different expression in cancers, including prostate cancer. We are searching for the relationship between survivin levels in normal prostate tissue, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), and prostate adenocarcinoma in this study.ResultsThe study surveyed 282 prostate samples, 94 normal, 94 BPH, and 94 prostate adenocarcinoma samples. Survivin expression was absent in normal prostate tissues. In the BPH group, the survivin expression level was higher than that of the normal group. In the adenocarcinoma group, the survivin expression level was higher than that of the BPH group. There was a significant association between survivin expression level and the adenocarcinoma stage.ConclusionAlthough there is no expression of survivin in normal prostate tissue, its expression is slightly positive in BPH. High survivin expression is related to a higher Gleason score in the adenocarcinoma of the prostate.
Rosa damascena Mill. a plant from Rosaceae family is traditionally used for treatment of many disorders especially against infectious diseases. The antimicrobial activity of R. damascena oil was determined against a large number of microorganisms including Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, yeast and filamentous by micro broth dilution assay. The oil was analyzed by GC and GC-MS. Chemical composition of oil revealed the presence of β-citronellol (48.2 %), geraniol (17.0 %), β-phenylethyl benzoate (5.4 %) and phenyl ethyl alcohol (5.1 %) as the main components. The MIC values of oil were in the ranges of 0.125-1 μl/ml. Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium, Salmonella typhimurium and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were less sensitive to R. damascena oil. The oil exhibited the antimicrobial activity against a large number of microorganisms especially against Proteus vulgaris and Klebsiella pneumonia. This oil could be used as a natural antimicrobial agent in treatment of infectious diseases; more clinical studies should be done for demonstration of its efficacy.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
