A method for continuously rearing cabbage root fly, Erioischia brassicae (Bch.) is described.Adult flies fed on sucrose, brewers’ yeast and yeast hydrolysate laid an average of 220 eggs per female when caged together in large numbers and 376 eggs per female when caged singly. Egg viability was 86 per cent. Egg hatch was severely reduced by relative humidities of less than 90 per cent, and the embryo became more susceptible to desiccation as it matured. The larvae were reared on swede, and maximum survival was obtained when the swedes were inoculated with an optimum number of eggs calculated from the ratio of 1 egg: 1.6 g. of swede. Different ratios were obtained from turnip and winter radish indicating that survival was probably related to the nutritional value of the rearing medium as well as to its availability. An average of 68 per cent, of the eggs placed on swede produced pupae that were equivalent in size to wild pupae. The fecundity of the flies was directly related to pupal weight and to the availability of protein in their diet. Adult longevity was reduced more by mutual disturbance than by any other factor.
The behavioural responses of Delia brassicae to host plant odour were observed in a large wind tunnel (6 times 2.3 times 1.8 m). Only mated, gravid females showed oriented upwind responses to host plant odour; visual stimuli had no effect. There was a marked optimum in the odour concentration for upwind flight but higher concentration stimulated flight activity in both sexes. The response levels were higher and the degree of positive phototaxis lower in females released in the tunnel 1 hr before test, than in those tested without this preconditioning. The effects of handling on response level were complex; physical disturbance inhibited responses at intermediate intensities but increased it at high levels.
Mixed cropping carrots with onions reduced attacks by carrot fly, Psila rosae Fab., on carrots and Thrips tabaci Lind, on onions, compared with those on carrots and onions in monoculture. Increased plant density also reduced the numbers of carrot‐willow aphid, Cavariella aegopodii Scop., Carabid and staphylinid predators of P. rosae eggs were trapped in higher numbers on the intercropped plots with higher onion:carrot plant density ratios (PDR) over both P. rosae generations but losses of exposed marked P. rosae eggs were not consistent with these differences. In addition, the PDR treatment effect was greatest when the carrots were intercropped with young onions and virtually ineffective once the onions began to bulb. Over 90% of adult P. rosae trapped entering carrot plots were female and the majority approached the plots upwind at a height of <40 cm above the ground possibly in response to the carrot odour. Row‐intercropping with onions caused fewer flies to enter the plots. Mixed cropping of carrots with onions probably reduced P. rosae attack by the onion volatiles disturbing host‐plant finding particularly when the onions were young. Mixed cropping with the French marigold, Tagetes patula L. was ineffective. C. aegopodii was not directly affected by intercropping as was T. tabaci, the latter being reduced in numbers by increased PDR possibly due to reduced 'apparancy' of the onion plants.
Intercropping brassicas with taxonomically unrelated plant species reduced infestations of the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae L. and the rootfly Delia brassicae (Bohé) by over 60% compared with those on brassicas grown in pure stand. Twice as many carabid and staphylinid predators of the immature stages of the rootflies were trapped on intercropped than on brassicas areas, but when they were excluded similar reductions in rootfly eggs occurred suggesting that predation was not an important factor suppressing rootflies in intercrops. Similar numbers of female D. brassicae entered mixed stands indicating that the response of the flies to host‐plant stimuli was not disturbed by non‐host plants. Flies were more active in the laboratory in mixed plantings than in stands of host plants or of non‐ host plants with host‐plant odour blown over them, and their rate of departure from these treatments was correlated with their activity. Oviposition by D. brassicae was reduced in mixed stands. The proximity of host and non‐host plants influenced the diversionary effects of the non‐host plants on oviposition behaviour, so that when 50 cm apart or less, maximum reduction in oviposition occurred. Single row‐intercropping, therefore, appears to be the best arrangement of plants for reducing rootfly attack and was most effective when the intercrop provided at least 50% ground cover between the rows at the time of pest invasion.
The responses of carrot fly larvae, Psila rosae, to host plant volatiles were studied. Two criteria for an oriented response were used: one based on whether an individual reached within 1.5 cm of the odour source and one involving analysis of the track patterns of larvae within 3 cm of the odour source. All larval instars were attracted to both host and non-host plant material, though to a lesser degree by the latter; they were also attracted t o COz, but not to Nz. A steam volatile fraction of carrot roots, and methyl eugenol, a volatile component of this fraction, also attracted the larvae, differentially at different concentrations. The possible roles of both COz and the host-specific secondary plant volatiles in the host plant finding behaviour of soil inhabiting arthropods are discussed.
Carabid and staphylinid predators of the immature stages of the cabbage root fly were identified using the precipitin test. Some of the staphylinids trapped were predatory and may have been responsible for a larger proportion of the total loss of the immature stages of the cabbage root fly than were the carabids. Several carabid species captured on brassica plots were found to have relatively high predatory values. Of the predatory carabids, Bembidion lampros was the most frequently occurring and, together with 5 other species, constituted over 90% of the total carabids trapped on brassica plots.
SUMMARYThe pupae of Erioischia brassicae (Bouché) overwinter in diapause, which extends for 105–126 days at a constant temperature of 41° F. (5° C.) and terminates, in the field, between the end of January and the beginning of February. Morphogenesis is completed at constant temperature after an accumulation of about 368 day degrees above 42° F., and in the field at Wellesbourne the first flies usually emerge during April.Phenological relationships of emergence and beginning of oviposition with accumulated day degrees and the flowering of Anthriscus sylvestris appear to provide reliable methods for the prediction of the emergence of the first flies and for the determination of the appearance of the first eggs in the field.
The responses of gravid female cabbage root flies, Delia radicum (L.), to brassica odour and allylisothiocyanate (ANCS) presented in either a discrete plume or uniformly dispersed in air passing through a wind tunnel were investigated. Relatively fast, straight flights occurred in diffuse odour conditions, while in discrete plumes flights were slower with more frequent changes of direction. Flies maintained a constant ground speed and track angle over the straight legs of their flight tracks in two different wind speeds by changing air speed and course. As flies approached an odour source in a discrete plume ground speed was progressively decreased and frequency of turning increased but track angles remained constant. This was achieved by reducing air speed and course angle. Flies released at increasing distances from an odour source moved upwind towards it in a series of short flights, the number relating to distance. The results are discussed in the light of current theories of anemotactic odour source locations and a sequence of orientated behaviour for host plant finding is proposed.
