Pediatric and adolescent patients treated with FNB for postoperative analgesia after ACL reconstruction had significant isokinetic deficits in knee extension and flexion strength at 6 months when compared with patients who did not receive a nerve block. Patients without a block were 4 times more likely to meet criteria for clearance to return to sports at 6 months.
This study supports the hypothesis that hip arthroscopy in professional athletes is associated with excellent rates of return at the professional level. However, postoperative performance outcomes varied based on sport and position.
The authors’ study evaluates the complications associated with the treatment of clavicle fractures in adolescents. During the study period, 153 clavicle fractures occurred in patients between the ages of 14 and 17 years who were treated at the authors’ center, of which 23 (15.0%) were treated surgically. Compared to the fractures treated nonoperatively, the surgical fractures had greater shortening (mean, 2.0 vs 0.9 cm; P<.001) and were more likely to be comminuted (65.2% vs 23.1%; P<.001). Complications occurred in 21.7% of fractures treated surgically. One delayed union occurred in the nonoperative cohort, but no other complications or patients who required clavicular osteotomy for malunion. Pediatric fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons treated 78 displaced fractures, resulting in 8 (10.3%) surgeries. Nonpediatric orthopedic specialists treated 46 displaced fractures, 15 (32.6%) of which were treated operatively (P=.0035).

Outcomes reporting is highly variable in the hip arthroscopy literature. More than 20 different PRO instruments have been used, which makes comparison across studies difficult. A uniform set of outcome measures would allow for clearer interpretation of the hip arthroscopy literature and offer potential conclusions from pooled data. On the basis of our comparative responsiveness results and previously reported psychometric properties of the different PRO instruments, we recommend more widespread adoption of the iHOT PROs instruments to assess hip arthroscopy outcomes.
The standard EOS imaging system moderately reduced the total radiation exposure to skeletally immature scoliosis patients. Over the entire treatment course, this represented 2.72 mSv mean reduction or 0.91 years of background radiation. Posteroanterior films significantly reduced breast and thyroid dose.
Tissue repair after trauma and infection has always been a difficult problem in regenerative medicine. Hydrogels have become one of the most important scaffolds for tissue engineering due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability and water solubility. Especially, the stiffness of hydrogels is a key factor, which influence the morphology of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and their differentiation. The researches on this point are meaningful to the field of tissue engineering. Herein, this review focus on the design of hydrogels with different stiffness and their effects on the behavior of MSCs. In addition, the effect of hydrogel stiffness on the phenotype of macrophages is introduced, and then the relationship between the phenotype changes of macrophages on inflammatory response and tissue repair is discussed. Finally, the future application of hydrogels with a certain stiffness in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering has been prospected.
