Foliar fertilization makes it possible to quickly provide plants with essential nutrients, mainly micronutrients, which can significantly improve the quality of yields. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of foliar fertilization with fertilizers containing calcium and microelements on yielding and fruit quality of highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.). A two-year study was carried out in western Poland in an experimental highbush blueberry production plantation. During the growing season the bushes were treated several times with the following foliar fertilizers: Armurox, BioCal, and Stymjod. The experiment assessed bush growth vigor, yield, fruit quality characteristics, sugar, organic acid, and health-promoting substance content. It was found that as a result of fertilizing highbush blueberry bushes with foliar fertilizers, the leaf blade area and plant yield increased significantly. The fruits collected from those bushes were characterized by a higher mass, firmness, and TSS content. This also applies to blueberry fruit after storage. Foliar fertilization had no significant effect on the content of chlorophyll a and b in the leaves of northern highbush blueberry, on fruit coloration, the content of sugars, ascorbic and citric acids, and the phenolic compounds in them.
Due to the pro-health properties of highbush blueberry fruit, the interest in cultivation of this species has been growing significantly, which is evidenced by the current increase in world fruit production. Therefore, the aim of our review study is to present the impact of soil and climatic conditions and cultivation methods of Vaccinium corymbosum L. on fruit yield and quality in Central and Eastern Europe. In this region, one of the most important abiotic factors determining the yield level is the minimum temperature of the winter period and short-term increases in temperature, which are conducive to the damage to flower buds. Another factor determining the success of cultivation is soil. In addition, highbush blueberry has specific soil requirements, which result from its characteristic root structure. The adverse impact of soil factors can be mitigated to a certain extent by the use of mycorrhizal fungi. In this chapter, besides the cultivation conditions of V. corymbosum, the pro-health properties of fruits resulting from the presence of bioactive compounds such as polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, especially anthocyanins, will be presented. Besides, factors, such as environmental conditions, degree of ripeness and variety, affect the content of bioactive substances.
The premiere of “Gone Home” (The Fullbright Company, 2013) and its huge success caused many discussions in the game industry media and among the players. Questionable were not only the LGBT themes in the game, but also the question about what actually “Gone Home” is. Is this a game? Or maybe an interactive version of literary stories or another media experiment? The purpose of this article is an attempt to answer that question and to analyze the game in terms of the mechanics used in the narration (environmental storytelling) and their influence on the player’s perception of the story. A general reflection on the potential for storytelling present in the medium of computer games will attend to this analysis.
Saw-the movie of Hollywood director James Wan and the classical short story by Edgar Allan Poe The Pit and the Pendulum were created in a completely different time, but they have many elements in common. The main characters of the movie are in a similar situation as the narrator of the short story, while the serial killer created by Wan acts like the Spanish Inquisition described by Poe. This article compares those two works with regard to their plot, used mediums and it also focuses on the crucial characteristics of the movie language and literature language.
