Risk factors and course of steroid diabetes were investigated in 145 renal-transplant recipients who were given a high-dose steroid regimen. Persistent steroid diabetes developed in 25% of the patients and transient diabetes in another 22%. When antidiabetic therapy was required, insulin had to be given in 50%. The incidence of steroid diabetes correlated with steroid dose, age, body weight, and diabetes heredity but not with abnormal glucose tolerance or with another complication of steroid therapy, posterior-pole lenticular cataract. There was no association with HLA-A and B antigens. Thus, steroid diabetes is a frequent complication of high-dose corticosteroid therapy and is similar to type II diabetes. However, it often requires insulin therapy.
SLT with 25 laser spots on 90 degrees of trabecular meshwork has a similar pressure-lowering effect to SLT with 50 laser spots on 180 degrees of trabecular meshwork. The new treatment regimen with less laser spots could increase the repeatability of SLT and reduce potential tissue damage in the trabecular meshwork.
We studied the occurrence of perforating eye injury (PEI) during the period 1974-1979 in the population (1.5 million) of Stockholm county. Information was obtained from medical and population registries, medical records and personal interviews. PEI was almost 6 times more common in men than in women, and age specific incidence rates varied from 94.3 per million person years in young men (10-19 years) to 3.9 in elderly women (60-69 years). The risk appeared somewhat increased in the unmarried, but not in foreign citizens. Most injuries occurred during the day with no less than 54% between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and only 2% after 9 p.m. The most common activity at the time of injury was paid work (27%) followed by play or sport (23%), while 10% of the cases were due to fight or assault. Among those injuried in paid work, the most common occupation was construction worker or building metal worker. Metal and glass fragments were the most common perforating objects, but thorns from planted bushes caused many perforating injuries in children.
The right eyes of 28 newborn infants have been examined retinoscopically, and the anterior chamber depth, the lens thickness and the length of the virteous were measured by ultrasound. In 15 of the infants keratometry was performed using the Javal-Schiötz keratometer. The total axial length of the eye was found to be longer the heavier the weight of the baby, whereas the lens thickness showed no correlation to the total axial length or to the weight of the baby. In only 1/3 of the babies was the corneal astigmatism less than 0.5 D. A significant correlation (P less than 0.01) was found between the total axial length of the eye and the length of the corneal radius.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
