La région comprise entre les vallées de la Marne et de la Vesle à hauteur de la Montagne de Reims (Marne) a livré une vingtaine d’ateliers de potiers datant de la fin du i er s. av. J.-C. au iv e s. ap. J.-C. La céramique belge ( terra rubra et terra nigra ) constitue les productions les plus caractéristiques, mais de nombreuses autres catégories sont ici classifiées. Cent cinquante échantillons prélevés parmi ces productions ont été analysés par fluorescence X et soixante-dix-huit ont été préparés en lame mince pour une observation pétrographique. Au-delà de la caractérisation du mobilier, les analyses ont permis d’identifier l’origine de l’argile, unique pour l’ensemble des productions : la couche de l’Yprésien inférieur (Sparnacien), présente en bordure du plateau de la Montagne de Reims. Dès lors, il apparaît que l’implantation des ateliers s’est effectuée selon la nécessité d’un approvisionnement en matière première ou selon l’attraction des voies de communication et des agglomérations. Le groupe de pâtes champenois est donc homogène, mais la pétrographie a défini des sous-groupes (CHAM1 et 2) qui correspondent à des utilisations différentes selon que les potiers fabriquaient de la vaisselle de table ou de cuisine.
