This article evaluates one university's efforts to achieve excellence in teaching while simultaneously solidifying its position as a top research institution. Based on the assumption that lasting change requires cultural transformation, the university involved its faculty in a systematic discussion about teaching and used the resulting feedback to alter policy. Faculty reactions, as captured in this case study, could be instructive in guiding instructional reforms at other research universities.
In an attempt to join theory and practice and contribute to the teaching function of academic advising, advising procedures at two colleges were studied. After participating in organized advising programs, students reported the nature of the advising they received Then faculty advisors in programs rated as developmental by their students answered questions about specific advising attitudes and practices. The results suggest effective advisor attitudes and practices.
How do intellectual initiatives across disciplines evolve? This qualitative case study of 11 interdisciplinary research initiatives at Emory University identifies key factors in their development: the passionate commitments of scholarly leaders, the presence of strong collegial networks, access to timely and multiple resources, flexible practices, and missions of investigating societal problems. Challenges include sweat equity, division of labor, leadership momentum, and communication. The study recommends strategies to consider when developing or supporting similar kinds of initiatives.
